Miami has only been Preseason #1 in the AP Poll 3 times in their history

True. Although in my mind, I like to remember the 2001 Canes as dominating every opponent they faced that year.
The offense also went to sleep at times in the VT game. They were pretty good on defense but we just took our foot off the gas when we went up double digits. People forget we had to survive Ernest Wilford, who was a very good player, dropping a 2pt conversion right in his hands that would have tied it. And we couldn't run out the clock after that. We needed an Ed Reed pick to seal it

FSU was #1 to start the '88 season after Miami were the undisputed champs for the '87 season. We all know what happened that first game as FSU was doing this by the start of the 4th quarter

Nov 18th and Nov 25th of that season were two of the most fun nights in the WEZ. The night of the Washington game, I forget if it was Mcdougle or Vilma who picked off a pass near the WEZ. If that **** OB didn't almost fall down right there, I don't know what's what. I was a young student at UM, but I sat with my local buddies in the WEZ instead of the student section. What a place to be.
McDougle. I was there too. 😉

Ha. The media will always media though.

After we beat Rutgers 42-17 in 2002, the story was that we struggled against them and they almost beat us. 🙄
Ah man I remember that game! The canes were sleep walking for most of the game and turned it on late. The media loves to hate us. If it were one of their darling blue blood teams, they would have praised them for a gritty comeback from a sleepy early afternoon game that alot of top 10 teams would sleep walk through.

True! I'm losing my memory fam. Ha!
I feel you, I’ve forgotten more football than I remember too!

But I just cannot forget seeing McDougle take that lovely swan dive into the end zone. I’ve been to a lot of great games in my day, but that was one of my favorites.

**** I miss that old canes swagger so much. Hopefully these new canes can bring that magic back for good and not tease us like 2017.

I believe Larry Coker called off the dogs way too early after the 59-0 and 65-7 wins over Syracuse and Washington. He thought a 20-3 halftime lead at Virginia Tech was enough to coast. He almost cost the best college football team of the modern era national championship.

He did the same thing in the opening game at Penn State. He turtled with a 30-0 at halftime lead. Same with the national title game with a 34-0 halftime lead. I’m not saying the team needed run up a 60 burger in those games (although that would’ve been nice given the two opponents) but I believe it teaches the players they can coast.

This attitude nearly ruined the 2002 season several times before it finally culminated by falling flat against Ohio State. Make no mistake, the Buckeyes were a good team and deserved to be #2 but Miami was a much better team. The Buckeyes had a much better coach.

One of my favorite Jimmy Johnson stories is from a 51-7 win at Arkansas. The back ups were in the game late in the fourth quarter with a 51-0 lead. Johnson wanted a shut out and told the starters on the bench if Arkansas scored the next week’s practice will be the hardest they’ve ever had.

Well, Arkansas scored, and those practices the next week were ****.

Larry Coker would’ve thrown a pool party.
