Miami’s highest-rated QB commit in more than two decades and resident “class ambassador,” Israel Abrams headlined the Hurricanes’ second official visit weekend. The five-star Elite 11 Finalist was named to Nike's The Opening Finals later this month and continues to see his stock soar with his intangibles and raw traits.
From why Miami was a no-brainer to who his mindset with the Hurricanes 2027 class, Abrams broke it all down with me for CanesInSight.
On his overall visit:
“It was good, man. Getting down here to get around some of the guys was really good.”
On being known as Miami’s 2027 class “ambassador”:
“I'm not going to take away from the guys that've been here already, like J4 [Jaylyn Jones] — the first to commit in the class — so I’m gonna give it to him as the class leader, I can't take that.”
“But just being like you said, an ambassador for the class and just working with guys to try to get them to come be a part of something that myself and the commits it can clearly see that it's going towards. We are just trying to get some of the guys we want to see you with us.”
On how this visit solidifies why Miami is “home” for him:
“Getting around the players was a really big part for me.”
“Not like going out or anything, but just getting on the players to see how they were. I wanted to get around the team and see, like ‘are these some guys that I want to be around for the next 2 to 4 years’ and they are 100 percent.”
“It was all love and they showed compassion the whole time I was here. So shout out to guys like Gavin [Mueller], [Dereon Coleman], Milan [Parris], [Somourian] Wingo and man and a couple of the defensive guys.”
On his relationship with his fellow 2027 commits:
“Ty [Keys] is goofy man, he’s cool. Getting around a guy like that, like how I’m goofy off the field, and at the same time there’s guys that are committed that are a bit more serious. A guy like Ty he's a little bit of both, good vibes. I like being around him because he’s so positive and optimistic.”
On what he learned from his recent Elite 11 experience:
“I'm not a finished product, I just gotta keep working, man.”
“Them guys out there hungry, just like I'm hungry. But I'm not going to let them be hungrier than me. So I'm just out there trying to work and just trying to pick up everything I can.”
On his reaction to five–star Jaiden Bryant flipping to UM:
“I was in Bible study at home on Wednesday, and I got up to use the bathroom, took my phone out and he committed I was like, ‘wow, five star’.” — Miami GM Dennis Smith passing by mocking him, “Wow five-star.”
“Getting a guy like Boog, he's a personality. I got close with him this weekend.”
“Those edge rushers bring classes together, they’re going to be on the field day one.”
On Miami landing four five-stars and still targeting more in Kaden Henderson and DJ Jacobs:
“Those are guys that belong here competing with guys like us because we know they’re on the same timing.”
“We only recruit people at Miami that have the same mindset. It’s about what’s the best fit for Miami and the best fit are the guys that are here and working.”
On his message to the overall college football world:
“I mean we’re hungry man and we’re not fed — it's time to get fed. Not no corny stuff, it’s really time to work and put our heads down and just get and just claim what we didn’t finish last year.”
“I know we’re going to take care of business these next few years.”
