Miami Commit Donte Wright Turns Heads, Earns Top Performer Honors at The Opening Finals

Miami commit Donte Wright put together one of the best performances of the day at The Opening and walked away with Rivals’ Day 1 MVP honors.

With some of the top prospects in the country competing, Wright consistently stood out during drills and one-on-ones. The talented cornerback was physical in coverage with receivers, and was showing how good he really is.

The higher the level of competition, the more Wright seemed to shine. He looked right at home going up against some of the nation’s top prospects, making play after play and grabbing the attention of scouts and analysts throughout the day.

Being named the top performer at The Opening is never easy because of the amount of elite talent on the field. Still by the end of Day 1, Wright had made his case as the best player in attendance.

Performances like this only show what the staff already knew when they secured Wright’s commitment. The Hurricanes didn’t just land another defensive back, they have landed maybe a future star in the recruiting class.

Day 1 belonged to Donte Wright, and if this performance is any indication, he may not be finished making headlines this week.

An even bigger fan of this youngin since he's remained a Long Beach Poly Jackrabbit and not transferred to Mater Dei, St, John Bosco, Bishop Gorman or IMG. Man, he's gonna look good in Orange & Green

Wright made an early commitment to Georgia but throughout his recruitment, the Long Beach Poly standout made it clear he would take other visits and consider other programs.

Leading up to his flip to Miami, Oregon was still decently confident it was going to land him as his relationship with position coach Rashad Wadood and others was a major factor in his thinking.

But over the offseason, Wright and people close to him have said the Hurricanes took an edge in his recruitment over the Ducks and the Bulldogs and his flip in May wasn’t necessarily a surprise to people on the inside as it was to some others.

“Coach (Mario) Cristobal was telling me that as soon as I step on campus I’d probably be starting for sure,” Wright said. “That played a big role. Also, things outside of ball, he said he’d take care of me with business, academically and just for life, I’d be set up perfectly.”

Don’t like the automatic starting bit but the other stuff I like

This staff doesn't guarantee playing time to high school recruits, nor does Mario play favorites. But if they think you can contribute right away, have no problem telling you. If Wright buys in from day one, he'll get plenty of snaps as a freshman.

Yeah I think Wright added a little sauce to that quote..Mario probably told him, "If you work hard, compete and show you are ready..I see no reason why you wont start year 1 like Malachi did". Im assuming we are expecting to lose OJ and maybe even Lucas if he balls out. Although I hope Lucas stay one more year selfishly to keep that secondary experienced as possible.
