Out against some of the best defensive linemen in the area, and even the country, 2019 OG Maurice Smith held his own and then some at the Opening on Sunday. He took maybe the most reps out of any of the offensive linemen and won all but one, earning a spot in the “Top 5” offensive linemen on the day. Smith kept it humble when asked about his performance, though.

“It was good,” Smith said. “Always room to improve, though. I was off-balance on some reps.”

Smith plays with great technique, footwork, and hand placement so that even though he’s undersized at 6’2” 280 pounds, he’s still getting the maximum out of his ability. He put all that on tape during his junior season, although his Miami Central teammates had a hard time becoming a cohesive unit.

“I did great, just a little bit of mistakes,” Smith said on his junior year performance. “We did good, we just didn’t really come together as one. That was a big problem.”

While he’s had contact with the staff at Miami and hopes to hear more from the local school, Smith is mostly garnering interest from two programs far north of his South Florida home.

“Marshall, Boston College… those two schools I’d say I hear from the most,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to coach Searels a little bit, but still don’t have an offer.”

Any visits on the horizon?

“I’m gonna do a visit in April or May to Boston College.”

He doesn’t know when he’ll settle on one school, but when he does, what will a deciding factor be for Smith?

“I don’t really have one (a decision timetable),” said Smith. “I want to go where I know the coaches really want me the most and show me love and everything. Somewhere I fit in at, that’s the most important.”

Good get-off, moves very well. Looks like he's got a good frame. Engages blocks and squares up really well. Like he himself said he needs to work on balance a bit and use his hands/punch a bit better, but he's got some really good tools to work with. If he were two inches taller I bet he'd probably be getting more attention already but he's definitely one to keep an eye on.

Stefan how is his arm length? Scaffie is 6-3 or possible a tad more but could play OT it was stated if needed because of his arm length. Georgia had a guy this year Isaiah Wynn (reach 33.5") who plated tackle at 6-2/ 6-3 and 308 pounds and he did a good job due to his reach.- he will be a guard or center at the next level.
