@Elijah's Biggest Fan at the request of @gogeta4 I would like to share on the experience from a parents perspective on why choosing The U. First of all I have been a Hurricane Fan since the late 70's and Shaq going to the U had to be his choice not mine. I played a part in his decision directly as an advisor and indirectly by him watching me watching Miami. On the recruiting trail we saw some impressive facilities on a number of beautiful campuses. What impress my wife and I the most was meeting Mark Richt at UGA, but ultimately UM won out because on no other visits did we see the Family Love like we saw at Miami. The love not from the current team and coaches but from the former players we would see on the number of visits... Edge, Jimmy Grahm, Beason, Vilma, DJ William's, Andre Johnson (never start naming names cause you always leave someone significant out) but to make a point we would always see these guys...and they would be like ok I'm home. I've been known to run on so keeping it shorter... The U was home for us we felt it...Now that Richt is at the helm it's a happy home. Warning this site can become brutal at times and I was advised early on to hush and not make myself known...it was some good advise I didn't follow...but for the most part all here love the U but have different ways of expressing that love..and if you been on more than 3 days you already know. You have an obligation to help your son to make the best decision he can landing at a place that will be the best fit for him. I'm here to say that UM was that fit for us... If I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now...our only visit would have been to UM. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me... Good Luck and look forward to seeing your son run through the smoke

I, and I know that I am not alone, am glad to have you as a regular contributor to this forum.

I too, appreciate Papa Shaqs input. It's great to hear stuff from a different point of view.

But I have no Idea what this thread title means? I must have missed something.

Edit: Nevermind, Now I see

Thank you so much! I will take your advice about this site. Yes they can be brutal but you won't believe the things that I have survived so a keyboard gangsta talking trash about my child is something I can handle but if I find that I can't I'll log off. Elijah would absolutely have a fit if I entertained foolishness online (he thinks he's the parent). As far as UM, this has been totally his decision. We felt the "family love" as well but I absolutely fell in love with Simpson and Banda 1st then the other coaches later on. When I see men talk openly about their wives and kids warms my heart because we want our son to be treated like family. I am not a football fan AT ALL. I am an Elijah fan. I'm actually just beginning to understand the game even though Elijah has been playing since Pop Warner. My husband is a UM fan and has been forever but we both want what's best for him. He'll be in those classrooms and on that field by himself so all we can do is give him advice. Congrats to you, your wife and your son!

@UknowWhat i love your posts and I love your son being at the U. I Miss the old days when panic wasn’t around and actually football conversations could Be discussed. This site drives me nuts but it’s the only good Canes one around. @Elijah's Biggest Fan i hope your son sticks with Miami but either way I wish nothing but the best for your family.

God bless parents like @UknowWhat and @Elijah's Biggest Fan

As a fan base, and as a message board, we’re lucky to have them.

No kid is perfect, but with parents like this, they start life and young adulthood with a solid foundation, and thereby these young leaders can help, guide and model behavior for those not as fortunate.

When you look at our team, the players like Shaq, DJax, Harley, etc and the coaches you know we have quality men and future leaders.

The best part is they still have that “Miami edge”, the swag, the rebelliousness, whatever you want to call it. But it’s just channeled, like always, on the field and against the competition.

Other fanbases don’t get it. There is nothing and nowhere like The U. It’s a family and life commitment that pays dividends in the short and long run.

The U changed my life for the better, I know it will do the same for Elijah.

Welcome to the U.

I wouldn't trade my experiences on the sidelines at the OB and hanging with Canes during the late 80's early 90's for any experiences I have had. The U and Miami are special places that cannot be experienced anywhere else.

Great post Papa Shaq. I too have a son going to the U albeit not on the football field. He as well grew up watching me scream and cheer on the U, and instantly became a fan as well. When it came time to figure out the next step, we surveyed other schools academically but nothing even remotely came close to the U. So he’s down there now sitting in the student section every single home game, cheering on your son and the others. I couldn’t be more proud of him, as I am sure you are of your son as well mate.

Elijah’s parents will do the best for their son; I hope the U family shows them, and him, the love we all have for this university, and the commitment to excellence (both on and off the field). It would be an honor to have Elijah as a Miami Hurricane, the best of luck in making your decision.

You remind me of a great point I missed... The class room sizes was also a plus... Shaq knows all his teachers unlike some classes at the bigger school where he would be 1 of 200 students in the class

I've been a Cane for over 50 years. My dream as a youngster was to attend the U and maybe even play some football - but mostly for the academics. Due to circumstances I won't get into here, my dream wasn't fulfilled, but my love for the U has, and never will waver.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for families such as @UknowWhat and @Elijah's Biggest Fan. You re-enforce my commitment to being a Cane and I wish you all the best in the future.

I most definitely appreciate that there are Cane parents/family on this forum. I would love to see more posts like papa shaq's schedule poster from the other day but I understand it's gotta be tough being a target of people who have nothing better to do than be miserable to others. What's the saying? this is why we can't have nice things?

Absolutely great they are here. It is great tribute to our Cane Family that they are. It is one of the many reasons nobody should trash our players ever. We are a family and the players our our kids too.
