Mentality.

The mentality around the Miami program, and around the South Florida football community at large since the Coker days, has just been weak-minded and entitled. Straight diva ****.

We think that just because a kid is from South Florida, or just because a kid has the "U" plastered on the side of his helmet, that he's automatically superior to anybody else. We ALWAYS overrate our players, and we ALWAYS think we have better talent than any of the teams we play.

Nevermind that it took us over a decade to win the Coastal, or that we haven't won **** since 2001.... nah we just tell ourselves we are better.

And when **** inevitably goes wrong, we always have the same fallback excuse. The same complaint every time....different coach, same complaint. Since it can't ever be the kids, we ALWAYS blame X's and O's.

Coker, Shannon, Golden... all had talented players (or so we're told), they were just dummies with X's and O's.

They said Shannon ran his vanilla defense and went through a string of ****** OC's, each with his own X's and O's problems (Patrick Nix's bubbles, Whipple's reliance on big plays). Golden had dorito's "bend don't break" defense and Fisch's bubble screens. Richt? Outdated offense, no motion, offense straight out of the 90's. Of course it never occurs to any of us that maybe the players just aren't that great.

Here's the bottom line.

The kids from Miami have egos that don't match their production. Point blank. They're not as good as they think they are. And that's true at the high school level as well as the ones currently at UM. And that's the fault of the coaches, the handlers, the families, the friends, and the community at large who think that just because the Canes dominated 30 years ago, that somehow these players today don't have to work for it or earn it.

Yeah, you get one or two kids like Jaquan Johnson who have that old school Canes mentality and work ethic and who are willing to do what it takes to achieve greatness, but kids like him are too few and far between.

Too few and far between. We used to fill a whole team with guys like Jaquan Johnson.

There is way too much entitlement, way too much "feeding the fam," way too much respecting of stupid decisions and frankly way too much feeding in to the egos of kids who straight up do not deserve it because they haven't earned it.

None of that would be a problem, except that they don't feel like they have to put in the time, focus and work to become great.

Do you think this team took Wisconsin seriously? Or Pitt? Do you think they have the hunger or the attitude of a team like UCF?

The soft Miami culture is something that needs to change. And it's bigger than just the head coach. It's a city of Miami problem. People in this community need to stop stroking these kids ego's, and stop giving these kids credit for **** that happened before they were even born.

RESPECT NEEDS TO BE EARNED, NEVER GIVEN.

We can be great, and we can win national titles, but to do this we need to get back to the winning culture we had back in the day... back when we were hungry and wanted it. We saw flashes of it against Notre Dame and VT.

Just my 2 cents. I'm sure it will offend people, but it's something to think about.

So why were our Golden, Shannon, and Coker teams packed with productive NFL playera who are still collecting NFL paychecks while Shannon coaches the UCF defense, al golden coache TEs, and larry coker does absolutely nothing?

A “city of miami problem.” You live in texas, son. Stick to celebrating your flag ship university’s first bowl win in five years.

No we didn't. But then again, it only takes a few of those type guys to demand more from the whole team. We just need a few scary motherfckers who won't stand for dudes slacking or thinking they deserve sht.

As for the culture in Miami, you're right, but it's not like we're the only ones with these kids. Bama is recruiting the exact same kids and convincing them they have to work or GTFO. That's one reason I'd like to see us back at full strength...it's hard to show a lazy but talented kid the door if you don't have a better guy to replace him with.

Who cares where the player is from? Can he play? I like the players Richt is recruiting. I also know that the talent level of our team was very low when Richt got here. I’m willing to give MR time to get this thing turned around. I like that he is not just filling the roster with bodies like Al Golden did. He is bringing in quality players that want to be Canes. That means it can take several classes to get where we want to be. I’m talking 4 to 5 classes. If we can win 10 games a year on the way to having a stacked roster that can go the distance, I’m satisfied.

The endless complaining on this board is kinda sad. 20 threads to complain about DL recruiting...

A list of some of the “entitled” south florida kids at Miami over the last few years:
Duke Johnson
Artie Burns
Allen Hurns
Olivier Vernon
Travis Benjamin
Sean Spence
Denzel Perryman
Phillip Dorsett
Brandon Linder
Jon Feliciano
Leonard Hankerson
Deon Bush
Jamal Carter
Brandon McGee
Lamar Miller
Ereck Flowers
Sean Spence

All these kids came here, acted entitled, never got better, and were the reason we lost so many games. It’s not like they were really solid college players who improved their games year after year, but didn’t get the wins they deserved because of ****-poor coaching. Nope. It’s the “city of miami” softness. Because Miami and South Florida players are known for being soft.

Some other soft south florida kids:
Dalvin Cook
Lamarcus Joyner
Kelvin Benjamin
Ryan Shazier
Joey Bosa
Amari Cooper
Patrick Petersen
Eddie Jackson
Calvin Ridley
Sony Michel
Antonio Brown
Lavonte David
Devonta Freeman
TY Hilton
Corey Liuget

There’s plenty more, but Meat’s stupid fake narrative is empirically wrong. The NFL is loaded with City of Miami players, more than any other City. And Ft. Lauderdale is third. You don’t get to the NFL by being “soft.” You don’t get to the NFl by being “entitled.” A lot of them are kids like Allen Hurns or Antonio Brown who weren’t high draft picks, but earned it the hard way. And in college, the highly-rated South Florida kids are generally the best players on our team in particular, end up being the highest draft picks, and the top kids who don’t come here go and dominate at other schools. Miami kids from the Golden and Shannon eras are still playing in the NFL. Golden and Shannon, on the other hand, will never be power 5 head coaches again. Sure, there’s some busts, but there’s always going to be busts.

So, **** off, Meat. Stick to dumb *** Texas football instead of creating fake narratives to deal with your insecurities over the fact that South Florida has far and away the best pool of talent in the country.Yeah, our offense sucked in 2011 because of the “mentality” of kids like Allen Hurns, Phil Dorsett, Lamar Miller, Travis Benjamin, Brandon Linder, and Jon Feliciano. Definitely.

Using UGA as the obvious example, just pointing out that they currently have exactly four players from South Florida on their 2-deep roster (unless I'm missing someone.) Sony Michel, Javon Wims, Riley Ridley, and DeAndre Baker - a RB, a DB, and 2 WRs. Everyone else is from Georgia, Louisiana, one from Mississippi, one from Jax...

That's five of their touchdowns on Monday, their best corner and another receiver who plays.

And the obvious point is that Georgia is a 12-hour drive away, and they still depend on "mentally weak" South Florida guys to get to the top.

Absolutely - it seems more like elite teams are cherry picking the elite So. Fla recruits, rather than "stockpiling" them, if you get me. The issue is multifold, and involves on-field production (finally starting to happen), but also involves battling schools with the kind of "support" *wink wink* that we simply don't have. There's no easy answer here. It's less about South Florida athletes being soft, and more about them being savvy enough to know where their bread can be buttered, as it were. Hence the dreaded "business decision."

Yeah. Money talks, and bullchit walks.:thumbsup_kid: hUh.

The Coker/Shannon/Golden regimes really did a number to this fanbase. Richt & co., over the last 2 years, have been effectively bringing knives to gun fights against better teams because of the roster composition and (some of) you guys are ready to declare the players and/or coaches aren't up to par. Meanwhile, Richt is re-making the roster in real time to get it to where it needs to be to compete with Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, et al., but you're too busy complaining about this and that. Let them work. You know they're significant upgrades from the previous 3 regimes.

This 2018 class is getting us close to a blue-chip ratio. The 2019 class should have us close to 70%, if not slightly above. That's getting into Alabama/Ohio State/Clemson territory. We're getting there. This is a process that is actually yielding results. Yes, we want to win the natty every year, but we're not doing that with a roster full of jags. We weren't a few players away when Richt got here like Georgia was when they hired Kirby.

With the apparent inneptitude and lack of attention to the defensive line and the tackle position, richt will soon be bringing wet noodles to a gun fight. This post is pre mature until the college game shifts to 7 on 7 because as of now, that is the roster he is building.

We are not within two seasons of the teams you mentioned until he closes on an elite offensive and defensive line. He has not done that yet.

Not mentality, its recruiting. Before Richt, we had a decade + of losing way too much elite S Fl talent. The few "elite" classes we did pull were skewed (Radio's top class, made up of mostly receivers from one school, etc)

Would appreciate more insights from your experience in Richt’s recruiting meetings. Does he open the meeting to questions? Does he take suggestions from you and others? Or is the fan base making definitive statements about things they’re not informed about?

Let this recruiting cycle play out before judgements are passed, is all I’m saying. And if we strike out on DLinemen, we knew that position group, outside of Nesta, was down in Florida this year but up next year. You know what is encouraging about next year when the DL options are significantly better? Miami being the leaders or in the lead group with several top DL prospects next cycle.

Some of you guys just want to complain no matter what the staff does. Either fight for the elite kids and pass on jags or you gotta take jags when you need the numbers. Can’t always be both.

You can thank the 7 on 7 and local high school coaches for the entitlement you speak of - they are out recruiting 16 years old to play for my team or come to my school and when they get them they demand nothing of them, football wise or academically.

Winning cures all and Richt is slowly doing that down here.

If 100 people only watched our last 3 games I don't think there would be 1 out of that 100 who would have guessed that we were 10-0 before that stretch.

What I am getting at is Richt coached the F out of this team this year. 10 wins with this team and key injuries was pretty **** good.

Look at his recruiting. Give it some time to blossom. Its amazing we have already got this far in just 2 years.
