X's and O's Mensah and Mali

I think it is all about trust. Mensah trust Toney to make those catches. Hopefully some of the other WRs can step up these next few games and build some trust with Mensah. I believe they will figure it out.
We talked about this WR room being best in nationand Barkate is his best friend who had 1k last year with him..

Up to the Clemson game, Mali has been ridiculously open so much that Mensah would be foolish to not throw to him. That started to change with Clemson and will also not be the case when we face teams with good DBs. I trust he'll then start to look more for the other WRs. Certainly Barkate since they've connected so much previously

We're going to see teams change the window post-snap more and more and sit on certain routes. The other 4th down conversion to Mali when they ran trap coverage was another example - we got away with it that time. Dawson better have an answer to make teams pay for cheating to jump our tendencies.

It’s a legit point, because nearly everything else he’s doing is excellent.

The 4th down, there was also a sack in the first half on the plus side of the field that Lofton was wide open in the middle of the field, but he was tracking Mali.

Barkate, Upshaw, Lofton, one of them is usually free. Mensah trusts Mali so much he’s waiting for him to get open, at least that’s what it feels like.

i'll screen capture the five ones that I saw. but agreed, it is like a high class problem, but one that will repeat itself with better teams that will shut down Mali post snap and cause Mensah to have to improvise.

He missed open Pringle as well
Yuppp That play really stands out because he is Locked on Mali running a long developing corner post route and pocket is collapsing and he has WIIIIIDE *** open Pringle in checkdown flats who will produce an explosive play and he rather try to force pass for Mali than taking a great play smart QB play..

rewatched the Clemson game yesterday and concluded that Mensah focuses too much on Mali when he has better options. i counted five forced throws.

for example, on the fourth down throw that was defended by Hampton, a throw that was slightly behind Mali, he had Upshaw right in front of him for a first down. on the drive that resulted in the second field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, he was flushed out of the pocket to his left and threw into the corner of the endzone where mali was, but he had TE Briggs wide open in front of him.

this needs to get fixed, meng.
When Mensah was completing 90% of his passes there was nothing to be said. But now with tougher opponents and his completion percent coming down he has to see the open receiver. Film does not lie and if you listened to Mario he said Mensah said after the Clemson there was a lot to work on. Mensah gets it.

That's the one. Mensah starts seeing the field and it only makes Mali that much more unguardable

It’s like nitpicking but it’s true. He left some wide open opportunities on the field upon rewatching the Clemson game.

I’m sure he is being coached up on it. That is by far the most athletic D we faced thus far and we still excelled but if we want a championship we need him to see those.

Extreme possibility Pringle scores on that play. There is no one within 20 yards and the vertical route runners immediately turn into downfield blockers.

For the guys that love analytics, if that play if drawn up for Pringle it has an EPA thru the roof. You are in plus territory. You are in a split two back set. When Pringle goes into motion, not one person on the defense moved or tracked him, which tells you the LB is keying on Fletcher and the other LB will either blitz or provide help over the middle if Mali options that way. Both strong side receivers are running verts. Mensah should have noticed that no one tracked Pringle and hit him when he stepped up. That play would have scored -- maybe they talk about this over the bye....

I agree! Now that they have time to review the tape, the RB can be the primary read if the motion doesn't move the defense. It feels so good to be in a position where improvements can be made; but not at the expense of winning.

on second re-watch, the second play below is questionable. Upshaw is open slightly before Toney. however, the other plays it is pretty clear Mensah had better options and focusing on Toney is an area that he can improve upon.

Remember. It is Nit Pick Bye Week.

Exactly what should happen in a bye week. Dawsons offenses have a pattern of disappearing for stretches, QBs becoming too reliant, etc.

Good learnings and opportunities to improve during the bye week.

1st play i 100% agree, pointed it out in another thread

2nd play is the correct read imo, i think the play is designed that way for upshaw to clear that window and mali to be open. Cb made a great play

3rd play i agree 100% but i will say this was one of the best throws any qb has made this year.

4th this is nitpicky, not mad at it, but Mallory leaked out pretty late

5th play is his worst decision of the game , maybe the season. We are lucky(not really) he got hit because this was going to be his first int, and i think this was a designed alert route too so idk how he missed this its usually easy for him

If im not mistaken there was another miss where he had coop wide open but went to mali. It was short 3rd or 4th down conversion, didn’t hurt because I think we ended up scoring
