BOT might be liberal, but they have a job to fill and the gnome queen has the university hemorrhaging money. It wouldn't be surprising if they went with a candidate with opposing philosophical views as the current maladministration.

The BOT isn't liberal- especially by academia standards. Shalala's personal politics were never an issue as they were smitten with her as a fundraiser-in-chief. Condi Rice is a pipedream in my eyes but the BOT would take her in a second.

A more realistic name that I'd actually take as a football fan is Gordon Gee. At least he wouldn't hinder the program and the BOT would probably be enthralled with Vandy on his resume.

Absolutely no chance. Situational influence dictates American politics. Obama in 2012 was in the single most favorable spot imaginable, as an incumbent whose party has been in office for only one term. That situation carries enormous benefit of a doubt. Only Carter in more than a century has lost in that scenario. Republicans were ignorant of the massive advantage Obama carried in 2012, just like Democrats were ignorant of Bush's identical advantage in 2004. I tried to point that out on the political forum here but that forum was/is flooded with posters who have no clue of the big picture. They didn't care that whites are down to 74% of the electorate, from 90% in Reagan's era, or that females are 54% of the voters in presidential years compared to 51% in midterms. None of that matters. We're angry and everybody feels the same way we do.

The networks have to fixate on the daily nonsense during the campaign, and books are written spotlighting certain moments and events. None of it really matters, compared to a handful of factors that are well known months if not years ahead of time.

Anyway, if we hire Condi Rice there's no sense in flying a banner. All she'll see is a mushroom cloud.

You may be overestimating the importance of the candidate's political background. I imagine many members of the BOT are much more concerned with perpetuating UM's excellence in education and biomedical research than in hiring a person of any particular political ilk.

I don't know this, though; I am merely guessing.
