Cowboys LB coach and former Missouri DC. Someone on tos mentioned him as a possibility for DC. Thoughts?

Well he's worked with Coach Kool before, so they would have familiarity with each other. Would make the transition easier since they both speak the same scheme. Could be a nice combo.

Prior to entering the pro ranks, Eberflus coached at the University of Missouri (2001-08). He came to Missouri as the defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach in 2001 and became the associate head coach/defensive coordinator/safeties coach in 2006. While with Missouri, Eberflus guided the Tigers defense to the Big 12 North Division title in 2007 and 2008, compiling a 22-6 record over that span. Not being limited to his role with the defense, Eberflus helped recruit All-American quarterback Brad Smith and wide receiver Sean Coffey while also landing defensive back William Moore and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

Before arriving in Missouri, Eberflus spent nine years (1992-2000) at his alma mater, the University of Toledo. He served as a student assistant coach in 1992, then as a graduate assistant in 1993 before landing a full-time spot in 1994 as recruiting coordinator/outside linebackers coach. He held that position for two seasons before concentrating solely on outside linebackers for two more seasons (1996-98). For his last two years at Toledo, Eberflus coached defensive backs. In his seven seasons as a full-timer, Toledo boasted a winning record each season, compiling a 56-22-2 record, including an 11-0-1 finish in 1995 and a 10-1 finish in 2000.

The Tampa-2 in Miami.....would be very interesting.

Why did he go from Big 12/SEC DC to NFL LBs coach though? Seems like a strange move, no?

This would be a money hire but it seems like he could be a candidate for some NFL DC jobs. I'm not sure if he would drop back down to college.

Upon further review his defenses got worse over time.

In 2006 they were 35th.
2007 they were 50th.
2008 they were 99th.

Not sure I love the idea.

He never coached in the sec. Also what makes you think he would run the Tampa 2? He isn't a marinelli disciple. He was lb coach in cleveland for 2 years before being on rob ryan defensive staff in dallas.

Hey. This actually would be an interesting hire. He helped implement Lovie Smith's 4-3 defense at Missouri and really got into detail with Kiffins defense in Dallas. I would be for it.

Being a Cowboy fan, I personally think he would be a good fit here. He's somewhat of a defensive coordinator in waiting in Dallas, although I don't think its for certain he runs a tampa 2 here. He has experience in many styles of defense, and even in Dallas, the DC (Rod Marinelli) doesn't run the traditional "tampa-2 defense", instead running a simpler 4-3 scheme, with a lot of press man.

The more I think about it, this may be our guy. No inside info, just reading my imaginary tea leaves, lol. Look at how fast We got Coach Kool. That means he prolly knows who the DC is gonna be. Ok, so that means that Kool trusts this guy, or he wouldn't be here or at least he wouldn't be here already. So either Eberflus is our guy, someone else that Kool has a trust in will be the DC, OR that Kool will be named Co-DC along with our LB or DB coach. Since he has only been named DL coach AT THIS POINT, that means IMO that he is not going to be a Co anything. My reasoning is because Richt has said that he wants a DC that he can turn the defense over to totally, so that he can spend more time doing OC stuff, right? To me that says, "someone that has DC experience, not someone that hasn't called a game at that level before." You don't give someone that has never called a game that kind of responsibility.

The connection with coach Kool goes back to the 90s at Toledo. So you might be right. Either way the last two DCs that Richt has hired have been really good. I trust his judgement and whoever he hires.
