Matt Campbell article

I'm not saying he can't be successful, I don't know him personally to be able to say anything with certainty. It's just to me, after having watched the coaching failures at Miami, I see his lack of never having to battle for elite kids(nationally or SoFla) as a concern I have with hiring Matt Campbell. Especially since he has 100% been a Midwest guy.

What? Guy’s last two recruiting classes has multiple kids from Florida

IMO, his buyout is preventing this from happening. Iowa State was smart and made the buyout equal to the total salary due to him for the rest of his contract. He is signed through 2024. So 6 years at $3.5 million per year, so $21 million and then pay him $4.5 million per year on top of that? I don't think so.

his buy out is $7 Mil. The article says the buyout is $9 mil last year. Where you get $21 mil from

So we need a proven elite recruiter...name an elite recruiter that’ll take this job that hasn’t been fired.

My position is we’re not getting any elite recruiter to come, unless he has some baggage (no or limited HC experience / average to below record) That guy doesn’t exist.

So, I’d like us to hire an innovator on offense. And I’m saying I don’t see innovative offense from Campbell.

Doesn’t mean the guy can’t coach. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t be successful at Miami.

But he’s as much an unknown as anyone else is, IMO.

Cool so let’s go hire Gus Malzahn or Kliff Kingsbury. That we can be all innovative and pretty while going 8-4

PS: Innovation doesn’t equal winning

I said elite kids. ****, Youngstown State has multiple recruits from Florida in every class. There's a big difference between wooing 3 stars that none of the big in state schools want and actually having to battle the Ohio State, Alabama, Florida, FSU's of the world for the elite players. He has no track record of landing elite kids. Period. Which isn't his fault because of where he's coached. But, it's just something I find concerning when like someone else said, he's not an Elite X's and O's coach. That's it.

He’s not going to be battling for elite kids at ISU. You’re acting as if that job is like Mississippi State

Lol.

Malzhan has played for a title and beat the 2 teams playing for the national filter last season. He’d be held in higher regard if not for having to play Saban every year and sharing the state with him.

I’d be ecstatic to hire the next Gus Malzhan.

As for Kingsbury ... I’d hire the guy who actually taught him the offense. I don’t think Kliff has the single-mindedness to be an elite HC. He’s too busy still living his QB lifestyle, IMO.

He signed an extension last year keeping him at Iowa State through 2024 at $3.5 million per year. I am assuming there is no change in buyout terms from the first agreement. Even if there a reduction in the buyout from the remaining amount due on his contract to say $7 million, do you really see Miami paying that much as well as his salary on top of that?

For that matter, what is the buyout for Babers? Everyone seems to be mentioning him as well and he just signed an extension.

You forgot an important note! Gus got there with Gene’s players...not his.

I don't understand why it's so hard for people to understand this. If you're going to hire someone who is a program builder or CEO, not an X and O guy, recruiting is going to be a big priority right up there with coordinator hires. The fact it's an unknown with Campbell, is a concern. And unfortunately, you won't know if he can be successful recruiting at Miami, until it's too late. It could work out, or we could be firing another coach in 3 years.

Educate me on this guy....is he an offensive mind or a defensive mind? Is he more the CEO type?

They can’t educate you. They just know Iowa State sucked, and now they’re average. Then they saw he won at Toledo, and now he’s the new “it” coach.

Yeah I'm trying to read up on my own about him but he doesn't excite me anywhere near as much as Babers or Neal Brown

Exactly. Thats my point. It's what concerns me about him because we don't know if he can recruit and land the big time players. He's never had to do it. And since he's not an X and O guy, that unknown is concerning. He could be great at it. But he could be bad at. Just like Golden was. We won't know until he's hired and thats risky to me. From the outside looking in. Blake James will be the one who talks to him and ultimately decides if he's suited to do it.

Oh yea tell me moar...

5-7, 6-6, 9-4, and 8-4 in the MAC is the same as 3-9 his first year(only time under 7 wins) two 8-5 seasons in the Big 12 with wins over OU, TCU, Ok St, WVU. Oh and his worst lost in this 2 years being by 14 points to Texas. Oh and he already has had three Head coaches work under him...two of which are Jason Candle and Scott Satterfield.

Guy I’m talking about the hype surrounding his name being similar to Golden. Smh. You guys fall for the hot name trap every time. Every hot name will not work here, its has to be the right fit. Golden is an example of that. I will take the guy that is either elite at recruiting or elite at Xs and Os and that understands the U every time.

Why don’t we just throw Jason Candle’s name in the bucket as well since he won 11 games last year at Toledo.

Then everybody being mentioned other than Mario is an inadequate candidate and Mario lacks on the other side.

Because Jason Candle isn’t winning huge at a place that other coaches haven’t won at. Earle Bruce couldn’t even win the way he’s winning there.
