Mateer

By the way, Mateer played 3 games against FBS opponents prior to coming back with the thumb injury (Michigan, Temple, Auburn). In those 3 games his average QB rating was 134.9. His QB rating on the season?
129.36

He was averaging 300 yards a game passing before he broke his hand / thumb. His passing yards took a huge dip when he came back but had multiple 300 yard games to end . Playing with that injury is a huge deal especially with how fast he came back. To think that didn’t play a big part in his numbers dropping is wild . But you’re the guy that said he’s the same guy as last year . When I called you on that dense comment you said “ G5”.

I said he was the same guy “before the thumb injury” in reference to his performance at the beginning of THIS season and his efficiency numbers support that. Throwing for 300 yards doesn’t mean you’re efficient as a passer.

The criticism of his mechanical habits is completely valid.

Notice I never mentioned mechanics as you said it’s valid. He’s not a pure passer but more of a gamer that opens other parts of the offense with his legs . Beck is more of a pure passer but defenses won’t be able to defend us the same way they do Beck. He’s a sitting duck.

Mateer’s run threat not only opens everything in pass game but opens the run game . Defenses will no longer be able to cheat or crash down. So his reads and coverages will be much easier than our previous qb’s. That said he might be a tad awkward playing qb he’s still a 64-65 percent passer . With this OL , run game and skill room he’d be tier one guy.

People forget he was a heisman front runner early on. Then his injury hit and he was different. The OU running game did him no favors. He’s probably staying at OU bc I’m sure they’ll convince him he can get back to pre-injury form.

Alright, I’m buying after the Mestermaker bowl game. He’s moved up for me and the hand injury thing is pretty valid after looking at games before the injury.

I'm no QB guru (like everyone else here), but even I could see in that game against Alabama that his footwork and fundamentals were very poor. Maybe that is something that could be fixed, but I don't know how anyone could have watched that Alabama game and not have some concerns about his game. And before the game, there was a lot of talk by the announcers that his thumb was finally healed enough not to affect his throwing.

Yeah i admittedly didnt watch him much this season and heard he had a bum hand/thumb that affected his play but watching that Bama game I saw things aside from a bad thumb that I didnt like, I remember thinking he was very MID especially his Base/platform when making throws was underwhelming and erratic , I was much more impressed by Ty Simpson once he settled into the game.

I was all-in on Mateer last year. He was far and away my #1.

Has his play this year caused me to question that view? Sure, a little. But i think that injury had a LOT to do with it. I would only judge Mateer on his 2024 play and the games pre-injury.....and i would need to know the medical situation. Is he fully healed now? His ball did appear to have more zip on it this last game. Or will that injury always have some impact on his "feel" and hand strength moving forward?

IMO, he never should have returned as quickly as he did. I had surgery on my broken thumb and was in a cast for 6-7 weeks. I did tear a ligament with the break, so it was more severe than Mateer's issue, but the strength and feel took a long time to return. Even today, i do not have the same strength or feel in that finger that i once did. I read that Dak and Goff both had that surgery and each returned on completely different timelines (Dak 6 weeks, Goff like 2).

Ya never know with the portal brother
if he stayed in college and entered the portal, he’d be going to another school with playoff aspirations.
If he went to any school in the ACC (other than Miami), that team would instantly be odds on favorite to face us in the championship game — that said he would only go to a top school.
