Mark Richt coaching tree

coaching trees are the dumbest things ever. Just because Belichick is a great coach doesn't mean his proteges like Charlie Weiss, Crennel, or Mangini will be also. Likewise, for all the Butch fans...nobody wants to hire his proteges for head coach like Coker, Shannon, Schiano etc.

The point is that people shouldn't deify Mark Richt when he hands out jobs to his former players.

And then shouldn't be ****ed at fans who are concerned with the experience of our coaching staff.

The point is, I'm not going to sit here and applaud every single hire Richt makes bc he has a terrible track record for coaching hires.

Hey Fully, if what you want to do is root for Saban or Urban there is a place to do that. Its just not on Canesinsight. Ohh look, someone else that knows what the best coaches in CFB are. Well thank you. But neither of them want any part of this university so maybe its time to let it go. It gets so old when guys sit here and just site the two best coaches in the game, not realizing how many coaches there are. Do you think the rest of the NFL would like Bill Belichick for their coach? Yeah me too.... Oh wait, I'm a life long Pats fan. We do have him.

I'd love to discuss all the elite coaches that came up under Richt in his 15 years at UGA.

Since I am unable to find any, I figure the board can use this post to inform me.....

He's had some decent coaches under him including Neil Calloway, who was his first OC and is now coaching
the OL at Western Kentucky.
Brian VanGorder is a pretty good coach, currently the DC at NDame.
Scott Lakatos was a highly-regarded DB coach at Rutgers and UConn before he took the UGA gig.
He left there for "personal reasons" and is now at Monmouth.
Not sure what happened there.
Kirk Olivadotti worked for him and is now with the Skins.
He lost another OLine coach, Stacey Searles, to LSU, and he later moved to Texas and
coached at VT the last 2-3 years.
No one will ever confused his coaching tree with that of Larry Kehres, Bill Snyder or Hayden Fry, but
lots of great coaches have also had disciples that have not fared well when they have moved
on.

also, when the new AD took over, he was forced to hire coaches that they wanted.

LOL I love this angle. I really do.

The idea that Mark Richt wasn't allowed to call plays or manage his own staff is laughable. I like Richt, didn't have him in my top 5 of coaching candidates, but I think he is a good coach.

But you look very foolish and pathetic when you try to sugar coat the fact that he 1) doesn't have an eye for coaching talent 2) doesn't win big games 3) got fired from a program that isn't as successful as we are.

Lets talk about #3 . If you're talking about overall success since 1983 then you have a point. But if you're talking about the last 15 years then you have no point. We aren't as successful as UGA. We haven't been close to them actually. We dropped everything to go hire this guy. That should tell you all you need to know about how important football is here and what its become. I actually think he's going to do well here. But you need to temper your expectations. We're not going to go get a meyer or saban. This is the best we were going to do. Learn to accept it.

Ok but the problem is you have fans who are saying "well if Richt wants him as coach then he's good with me" as if Mark Richt is Nick Saban. You can't have it both ways. Fans should be skeptical of every inexperienced coach that richt hires. It's cmmon sense.

Ah so as a chicken little fan you don't think we should expect to win titles anymore? Do you have any pride? And no, we won't win big with a mediocre staff.

Wanting to win titles and expecting them are two different things chief. What has the school done in the past decade to give you any reason to expect titles?

Ah so you are saying that fans should no longer expect titles? Go see how that goes over with the fan base......lol if Richt is winning 8 and 9 games a year by year 4, banners will fly again.

Shall we talk about the elite coaches under butch Davis? Randy Shannon and Larry Coker?

Or chip Kelly and his four failed coaches from his coaching tree

GTFOH.

Someone get rid of this troll

You didn't answer the question. Tell me why you expect titles? Also, are we talking national titles or acc titles? Because richt will have us in contention for the conference yearly.

Not that I wanted to BBB, but here is a Davis tree:

Pagano (NFL HC)
Chud (NFL OC and former HC)
Todd Bowles (NFL HC)
Greg Schiano (Former NFL HC, OSU DC)
Bruce Arians (NFL HC)
Everett Withers (JMU HC)

vs. Brian Van Gorder.........it's extremely worrisome when you hear he's bringing a bunch of his former players to be coaches when he has a horrendous track record of hiring and developing coaches.

I was with you till you put Arians in the Butch "Tree" Come'on

He does not have a good coaching tree at all, and he is not an elite head coach at this point in time, according to his resume. But he is at least proven to be competent running a major program, which is a huge upgrade over our last three head coaches. The time to judge him for his time here will come but it is very premature at this point in time.

I understand the concern about the hires, I hope that we are not overpaying for Georgia guys that Georgia does not feel strongly enough about to match salary increases. That is possibly what they did with Tracy Rocker, just matched or offered more than whatever was offered by Miami.

However, we should not overreact to two of the least important hires on the staff, the RB and Special Teams coaches aren't the ones who usually make or break the coaching staff, and who knows, we may be pleasantly surprised. Let's hope he gets a legitimate proven defensive coordinator, to me that is the most important hire. I also hope the other offensive coordinator in the CO-OC of Brown is more of a veteran, I am a bit uneasy with him being the CO-OC with Richt if that is what they are doing.

Valid concern but it's not some smoking gun as to Richt's ability to win big here. Plenty of examples have been brought up already.

Ok remove Arians.

Now compare to Richts tree and it still ***** on his. I'm just not big on slurping every move the guy makes. I rememberwhen people were throwing parades for the James Corley hire.

James Coley. From the Fisher tree. It's crazy how he managed to win a title with these types of coaches on his staff...

Agreed, but I think this entire conversation on his past staff and what he is doing here could be the smoking gun as to why he hasn't become elite.

As this and many other boards have shown, you don't question the new hire until its apparent to everyone he is a failure... smh

And yet Mark Richt never won a title, did he?

Do you want to play the "bad coaches in a coaching tree" game? B/C Richt would win that one in a landslide over Jimbo.

Will reserve judgement until I see the completed staff composition. Brown is a rising star in the profession and is a major upgrade over Ice. Hartley is a ST Coordinator for Christ's sake.
