He confirmed what I thought. That having Damian Martinez here made him a better running back.

Freshman Mark Fletcher was like the first time you play a football video game and learn there’s a “turbo” button. You hand the running back the ball and immediately hammer “turbo”. Sometimes you hit the hole really fast and break a chunk play and sometimes you run really fast right into your lineman or a defender.

Once you learn to slow it down for a second and wait for the play to develop, your running game becomes significantly more consistent. Fletcher isn’t quite at the patience level of Martinez, who would sometimes just stand in the backfield with the ball on a zone play before hitting a hole but he definitely runs more with his eyes open now. Keep your head up, trust your linemen. Wait for the opportunity and then hit the hole. Not everything has to be a short yardage hammer.

I always liked his combination of speed and power but he had to learn how to play the position. Should be a very nice 1-2 punch with him and Lyle.
