Marios' Game Chart

The call was fine; it was just a bit rushed because I think Beck lost track of the play clock, and we had to hike it quickly. Our line wasn't fully ready, which gave the FSU player the ability to rush Beck and the throw.

@JayCane20 can probably go more in depth, but it’s just an analytic chart/notebook that covers most every situation and “what to do”
I checked our old decision tree in-game right after we failed to convert it to see what it would have said and basically everything from 24 down to the 2 on 4th down was kick the FG. 4th and 1 from the 25 was the first “go for it” outside of 4th and goal from the 1 where you go for it.

They have an extended analytic version that bakes in the score and time on the clock - 4th and 3 from the 23 is right on that border of the basic decision tree that you’ll see in HS and small schools. I believe 4th and 2 from the 23 is a neutral decision. So 4th and 3 is just 1 point off that on the basic model. No idea what time/score would do to that equation

Casuals: "WHY DON'T WE EVER GO FOR THE JUGULAR????"

**Going for the jugular results in an incomplete pass and turnover on downs**

Casuals: "WHY DIDN'T WE KICK THE FIELD GOAL????"
This is very accurate. And if Toney doesn't get caught up behind the RT's butt, it's a perfect conversion to end the game.

After the rewatch of the 4th quarter, we were 2 for 5 on passing plays for 3 yards total. The 3 incompletions equate to 1:30 of clock that didn't run. You can make an argument that we didn't need to throw once in the 4th quarter. But we did even though we didn't need or have to.

As for the potential 40 yd FG attempt.. yes, it sounds great if you make it. 40 yds is not automatic and you add a slight risk of a block. I was more upset about the bogus penalty on Blount that added 15 yards and stopped the clock. The game ends 28-19 if they don't call that BS

Don't forget the egregious holding that wasn't called in FSUs endzone that would've given us a safety.

This is the first time I really like his evals. He hit big in high school and the portal with real contributors everywhere in 2025. Plus some 2024 kids are stepping up. Pretty good lately.
Completely agree. They really went and got all right fits.

I think we were always going to go for it. Coach just wanted to call the TO first, then run the play after we were settled down and organized. Dawson appeared to have his bi-yearly lerooooy jenkins end of game moment and off the play went with :01 on the play clock. I was in favor of going for it, but rushing the snap, then tossing a moon ball that landed right around the LOS not the best execution.

Fun Fact: Most of our military operations are planned and executed the same way

My fellow war fighters know. 🤣

Love the reference

This right here man. I’ve already wrote alot on this. His calls and decisions weren’t brain dead, if they’re executed we aren’t even talking but praising.

Our oline doesn’t get lazy with run fits we aren’t starting on 1st and 15 for the grind it out mode.

Butch 2.0
See the problem is there are too many young bucks on here that only heard about the players during his time and not about how bad of a Game Day coach he was. I mean the fans paid for a banner to be flown over the orange bowl. LOL

But Butch knew what a great player looked like and was the one of best evaluators we've ever had.

They paid for a banner because of how bad a gameday coach he was, or because his team had no talent due to probation and got their kicks kicked in?

Oddly enough I didn't see any banners in 1999 and sure as **** not in 2000. Must have gotten a lot better as a gameday coach.

Regardless, this isn't for this thread. Mario played that game just fine. Everything had to go exactly perfectly for them to only lose by 6, and it did. The game was over at 28-3. When Daniels scored, we had a 99.6% chance to win, and it never dipped below 97% the rest of the night. Literally one more first down mixed in there and/or one of several fourth downs converted are stops, and this is all moot.

Well, it's moot anyway. We won and if you ask anyone with an IQ above 75 who hasn't been polluted by this board, they'll tell you we kicked the **** out of them, convincingly, and we're the #1 team in the country at this point. But, when you have to find something to ***** about, well...

i liked the decision. Play was there, easy first down, Beck got pressured.

It also says, if you have a lead, run on every down in the 4th quarter, regardless of 8 or 9 man fronts and play prevent D.

AH!

But it doesn't mean to run every ****ed time between the tackles with our entire line compressed shoulder to shoulder, and defenders are lined up three deep.

Time after time, after time, after time, after time ad infinitum.

Our defense was worn out as FSU stretched the width of the field.

Their defense only had a few yards to smother.
