Mario's decision to go for 50 yard FG at end of half down 10-0 instead of going for a 4th and 2 was a fatal blunder.. Needed 7 there with IU getting the second half KO. Our FG kicker (an FAU " project") has been awful all playoffs, a complete disaster and, of course, missed. Why not go for a makeable 4/2 with Mali cat( roll right, option to run or throw?). or Fletch off right side? Instead Mario goes out with our WORST offensive option possible- FG attempt with zero confidence kicker from midfield. 10-3 changes NOTHING. 10-7 changes everything. 10-0 gets you beat.

I disagree. Absurd is a stretch, and it obviously wasn’t fatal since we made much more critical errors (punt block most notably) and we still had the ball going in to win the game.

I can definitely see the argument for going for it, no problem there. But I see an argument for kicking, too. We just put up an absolute stinker of a half against a team expected to kick our teeth in. We had zero momentum. If we make it 10-3 right there, it’s a huge win going into half. I’d have taken 10-3 all day. Would’ve been great energy in the locker room to play that ****** on offense against that team on that stage and it’s a one-score game.

And 2 yards felt like 15 the way we were playing.

Hindsight helps, but I don’t hate the call. We had much bigger problems.

They had just stuffed us twice on 3rd and 1s and the 4th and 1 we went for earlier in that drive was brutal too, so I understand the logic of kicking to get points on the board, one possession game. And home turf, you have to imagine Davis is more comfortable? Game of inches unfortunately..

Not hindsight. In the context of the situation. 10-0, 10-3, or 10-7. And ok maybe not " absurd", but wrong.

Ok, but then why bother playing the game if 3/1 , or 4/1 are unmakeable? Win on 9 FG's from 50 +?

Absurd? Of course you go for the field goal. At the very least, its not an absurd choice.

To me, if Miami goes for it there and gets stuffed, that’s a massive momentum boost going into the locker room for IU. More so than a missed fg.

I don’t think there’s any way to correctly decide this scenario tbh. Because you’re right - say we go for it and make the first and then either score a td or get a closer fg, that changes the game too.

Conservative, not absurd.

I mean goddam, the guy went for it on 4th and 1 on his own 35.

In the list of things that went wrong, that one was relatively low on the list. I am more ****ed at the punt block (or lack thereof), than kicking a 50 yd fg. I get it; you want to get points in the board and make it a one possession game.

I'll retract absurd. Will amend to wrong. again, look at the circumstances at that time. 50 yard FG. kicker out of form,, outplayed all half, and sorry, a makeable 4/2.

This. Everyone just critiques the opposite if it doesn’t work

On a normal basis, yeah I would totally agree. But with it being the first kick of the NC game and being 50 yarder vs getting 2 yards, I wouldn't have said a word. You gotta warm up to a 50+ yard FG with some 30s or something first, IMO. But I would not have been upset going for the first down vs kicking it.

But we didnt decide " hey, lets let IU block a punt", It was play that happened. And once again, retracting "absurd". I amend it to wrong. I wont even say conservative. I like conservative. I though this decision was at the time was almost defeatist.

shame on you for trying to have a nuanced discussion on a message board. the fatherless incels in the Mario slurper brigade doesn't like anyone criticizing their stepdaddy.

The decision to kick there was totally disjointed. In a 10 pt game, with a whole half to go... you risk it all on your own 35 only to make it to the other teams 32. be in the same situation albeit MUCH less risky and then you ***** out? doesn't make any sense. he went from stupidly aggressive to stupidly conservative in 4 plays.

contrast that with Cignetti going for the knock out punch twice on the same drive.... it made a huge difference in the game. it may have been THE difference in the game
