Mario/Butch as game day coaches

Funny. I see fans that look exactly like them. On this very board. Claiming dat Butch Da Gawd and Mario is on notice.
And their names are on a list they don't want to be on.

I’ve seen it said on this board that MC is not a good game day coach.

What the heck does that mean? Poor time management? Wrong decisions on 4th and one’s? Lousy substitution decisions? Settling for FGs instead of trying for TDs or vice versa?

What’s the evidence for this? Or is it just based on poison coming from Oregon fans?

Honestly, just trying to figure it out.

And while I’m at it: Why is it gospel, among some, that Butch was a poor game day coach? I’ve heard this many times over the years. But what games did he blow? What were his awful decisions?

I'll take it.

When Butch left, due to UM jerking him around after turning the program completely around - SOME felt he really siht all over UM, over the players he recruited, and Miami in general - THUS - he MUST be a bad, terrible coach. They HATED him for leaving. Still do.

Just one problem.

He started - not from scratch - like Schnellenberger - but deep in a hole. Sanctions. Major sanctions. Almost Death Penalty sanctions.

Yet he ended by assembling the All-Time best college football EVER! All were self starters!

The Big Hates couldn't cover that up - so these Big Haters with Little Johnsons - only had one thing to resort to - IF he was a great recruiter - even if he started out in the hole fighting through sanctions - he MUST have been a pizzpoor gameday coach.

Schnelly won big here - but never again.
Erickson won big here - but never again.
Butch won big here - built the #1 team EVER - but never again.
Radar - I don't want to do that.
Golden - siht himself - and who gives a **** what he's doing now.
Manny - whatever. The wounds are still bleeding.

He had absolutely no depth....how'd his gameday coaching look beating #3 UCLA in 98??...how'd it look against defending NCs and #3 FSU in 2000??.....and how'd it look against gameday extraordinaire Spurrier in the 2001 Sugar Bowl??..
Butch is a made man in my opinion and a Miami Hurricane legend. He got robbed of a NC in 2000 and put together the greatest football team ever assembled. Yup but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his faults. I just have never thought his game day coaching was one of his strengths. Being truthful was another weakness of his but I still got love for the guy. Since you brought up the 98 season, I’m still reeling from watching Syracuse boat race his *** in the dome. So stop acting like the man walked on water and didn’t have his fair share of faults.

Nobody said he walked on water anywhere....so he had his faults....so F-ing what??....so do you. But once the Sanctions subsided, and our depth was alot better...and he got his staff completely together....it was on...Keep in mind...this site wouldn't exist without what he did. 25- 1st rounders in 6yrs....4 HOFers...and God only knows how many AAs....I'll be with him when he returns to campus in Oct. I'll give him your regards.

So far Cristobal has only had one opportunity to show what type of game day coach he is. The team was sputtering last game entire first half. He righted the ship at half time. The best game day coaches are the ones that make the winning adjustments at half time. He was able to do that, albeit against inferior comp. However, so far so good. Let’s see what happens on the road next game.

Yes. Correct.
Remember when Saban dumped Hurts for Tua in the middle of the championship game? Now that was astute game day coaching.

Also, you don’t have to wait til halftime to make adjustments. You can make them throughout the game.

How do we know you’re not butch lol

I recall being on the Metrorail heading back to campus. Fans complaining that Butch would run the ball even when no progress was being made. It would take him a few years to aquire the talent needed for conservative offensive play calling. Many of our fans complaining about Gattis do not acknowledge the similarities.
Fans in the 90s HATED Butch. That was the original Banner Plane, if you recall. “From Champs to Chumps! Thanks, Butch!
Many people were upset that the uncreative playcaller, Larry Coker, was promoted to Head Coach.

Fast forward to today, you already see the complaints about Gattis and Mario. You will see more after losing games.

Thos who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Give Mario time to recruit his own team.
Yes I sat in the Wez and he would get booed going into the locker room at halftime.

It's funny when you read this thread you can really tell who actually saw Butch coach at UM and who just goes off what he built. Butch was never known as a great game day coach but he was extremely smart and coached and learned from some of the best ever.

I think some of the knock on Mario at Oregon was his teams often played down to the level of competition. We saw a lot of that on Saturday.

Examples at Oregon:
2018 - lost to a 5-7 Arizona by 30 points, beat a 7-6 Arizona State by 2
2019 - beat a 6-7 Washington State by 2, lost to a mediocre Arizona State
2020 (weird Covid year, only 7 games played) - losses to bad Oregon State and Cal teams
2021 - lost to a 3-9 Stanford team, struggled to beat some mediocre and bad teams (Cal, UCLA, Oregon State)

Pat Narduzzi has the reputation as a poor game day coach, or at the very minimum, VERY conservative and not analytics driven. So here is an example of his braindead coaching, which occurred a whopping 4 days ago:

Pitt is hosting Tennessee this past Saturday. Tennessee is favored by about a touchdown, but Pitt starts the game out very well.

They are down only 21-17, and they get a stop very late in the half to get the ball back. Mind you, they receive the ball to start the 2nd half as well. Tennessee punts the ball to Pitt with 21 seconds to go in the half, Pitt has it on their own 37 yard line. What does every coach on earth do in this situation? Run the ball, and see what happens. If you get a big gain, maybe you call timeout and see if you can get into FG range. If you're stopped, let's go to the half, we're up 21-17 and getting the ball. AT MOST, you call a very quick, safe pass like a screen.

But what does the Nard Dog do? They drop back to pass, get sacked, fumble, Tennessee recovers, and they kick a FG at the gun to take a 7 point lead into the half instead of 4. And not only all that, but their QB gets knocked out of the game in the process.

Fast forward, the game winds up going into overtime, and Tennessee wins by 7.

Think Narduzzi would've liked those 3 points back?

This is an example of moronic coaching, and while Mario doesn't have this exact same dumbassery in his Hall of Shame trophy case, he has made some very curious (aka wrong) decisions somewhat like this to cost his team points and games.

And if you don't think it was that bad of a decision, here's what Narduzzi himself had to say about it:

"I'm a dumbass"
I actually like that call in theory. 21 seconds to get into field goal range from your 37 is doable with wuick out passes. If you run the ball as is the conservative play, you likely get nothing. You’d be better off just kneeling down if the concern is a turnover. As long as the passing is conservative and you’re not trying Hail Marys, In theory I don’t see the issue with it.
