Mario’s elite trait

Mario is doing what I expected . Recruiting well , building a tough and physical team that would occasionally play for titles. Then corching it up 1-2 games a year leaving you scratching your head. Which annoys me at times but I can’t be mad because I knew the deal yet I still wanted the hire. At least I knew we’d have identity for once to go with talent . On top of that nobody would have more passion for this job or put in more effort than him.
We’re close to this, so we’re gonna be sensitive to and emphasize the warts. As we should.

But doesn’t pretty much every coach corch it up during a season? I think, if you really look, it’s hard to find coaches who just don’t make dumb or bad decisions, even the type that can and do cost games. It happens all the time. It’s just magnified when you’re a fan.

Don’t get me wrong, I recognize he has some bad ones (GT is a biggie), but still, it definitely happens a lot to most teams. He’s a high-profile guy, so heightened scrutiny comes with the territory. But it’s not like the guy is losing games left and right on massively dumb decisions. There are key decisions for every team, coaches goof, sometimes you win and it doesn’t matter. Sometimes you lose and it’s a focus. But it’s happening all the time.

All that said, it’s an area for improvement. And I actually think he’s shown some progress.

Don’t think he’s corched once this season. Does the offense get conservative? Yes they want the clock to run because we’ve been in the lead. He/Dawson probably still expect us to be successful even when the defense knows the run is coming, that’s an identity thing. Only think I want it more creativity in the run game when they know we’re going to run it late, or RPO bubble screens to keep a defense off balance.

Watched Cristobal’s interview on Bussin with the boys and I’m not sure anything other than Canes football crosses that dudes mind. His authenticity and passion for the program is unmatched.

They tried asking him questions outside of football and it’s like they were speaking a different language. The guy is in another dimension and laser focused on bringing this program back like his life depends on it.

He has improved the talent big time. He has a solid formula which emphasizes trench play and being able to run the football. The addition of Hetherman's aggressive defense was huge. I was told that aside from better players in the secondary, Hetherman has allowed guys to use their talent, while Guidry's scheme called for too much thought and it really handcuffed the defenders.
Not sure I’ve seen the D standing looking at the sidelines as the opposing offense gets ready to run a play this year…if nothing else the D looks a lot more organized and ready to dominate when the ball is snapped which is something we didn’t see a lot of last year..

The penalties are a problem.

This year, teams like Ole Miss, Texas A&M, USC, Texas Tech have a ton of penalties, too and they are good teams. But we'd all admit they have a ceiling.

We can win a national title. This team is primed. But they are sloppy. Penalties. A few sloppy picks by Beck. Drops. If they want to win a national title all that needs to get cleaned up.

Mario and Dawson have coached conservative in the second half. They've played not to lose. Grow some nuts and finish these ******* jabronis. Killshots that aren't called back for a holding or illegal procedure.

Defense playing their asses off out there. Give'em some help.

The pleasure it would give me for him to win a title would be immense.
Brother I don't know a single coach that I want to see succeed more. Watching Mario win a title here would be a lifetime experience. Nobody bleeds orange and green more than that man. Nobody works harder. Does he have his warts? Absolutely but nobody could possibly deserve that more than a guy like Mario Cristobal!

There’s no guarantee we ever win a natty with Mario, and no he’s not a proficient coach. But he is ELITE at building programs, and was exactly what we needed:

X-axis is season with that respective program.
That cannot be argued...none of it....and hopefully giving us the rebuild we needed, he either becomes more proficient or we catch lightning in a bottle

Correct. All coaches make stupid decisions at times and have bad games.

Mario's elite trait as HC here is that he believes the only way to repay what he understands as a debt he owes to the university is make the program as successful as it was when he was a player here.

The difference with Mario is that as someone who grew up in Miami, played high school ball in Miami, and suited up as a Cane, his passion for this program is second to none and you can sense it when he talks about the team.
Said this in a post months ago. Working for Miami isn't just a job for Mario, it's a dream come true.

Mario is already a lunatic when it comes to his coaching regards and it showed at his previous spots. Now, that's fueled with coaching at his program in his hometown.

Leaving Oregon, let's be absolutely honest, was never logically based. It was always driven by emotion. That emotion is showing out.

I think neither Cristobal nor Kiffin become the coaches they are today if they don’t get fired and end up learning from Saban. Say what you will about Saban but he knew how to run a college program and has a **** of a coaching tree.
Butch Davis and Pete Carroll taught both of those guys before Saban. Saban would’ve died out if not for Pete’s guys rebuilding his offense

One thing I will say has surprised me is how quickly he has moved to correct mistakes. I think that is a very good sign.

True, but 1-2 games isn't as detrimental now with the 12 team CFP as it used to be. For instance, if Miami goes undefeated, gets to the ACCCG and Mario doesn't take a knee to beat GT, Miami still makes the playoffs. Stupid mistake that he typically makes, just not as detrimental as it would have been prior to the CFP 12-team field.
