What power 5 school was knocking down Freemans door to get him as a Head Coach? Shannon could have gone anywhere as a DC before he got the Miami HC job.

Well, he was offered $2.5M to be associate head coach and DC at LSU. That's demand. If you don't think he could have gotten P5 jobs I am not sure what to say.

You need a list of top coordinators that made a jump to a national championship contending program as a HC? How about everybody's favorite coach this week, Lincoln Riley? Same exact thing. In his 30s, OU. Kirby Smart, who has UGA #1 as I type this too. No HC experience. Right to UGA. So literally the hottest coach in America and the HC of the #1 team. Same for both. Dabo was promoted from assistant at Clemson (he wasn't even a coordinator iirc) to the big job. He won it all. So that's maybe 3 of the 4 top guys (Saban) who fit the bill.

There is a reason you can't just look at a piece of paper/resume and make a hire. Or being an AD would be easy. This guy has been crushing it everywhere, has a HC temperament, and was going to get a big gig within the next 24 months for sure.

I think the fact they locked him up so quick makes it easy to assume he had other potential offers.

the scariest part of this?

the same person who broke this news (if it turns out true) is the same person who broke the riley to USC news ,and is the same person who came out and said manny diaz is likely to come back

smh
This times 1000!!!! Literally my fandom is riding on manny coming back or not!

Valid points. I don't think any of the programs that you mentioned were in the position at those times that ND is in right now though. Maybe he will do great, I just think ND could have landed a lot bigger fish. Who knows? I was just saying that Shannon fit the exact mold as a rising can't miss coordinator at the time of his hire. We all know how that worked out.

Does make me wonder if they just want continuity in case they back into the playoffs.

Could be. I’m sure they think highly of freeman and Rees is a ND lifer. Curious about positional coaches. If none of them come over, sheesh - not a good start for kelly. I’ve always thought he is a bad fit for LSU but we’ll see.

Freeman at just 35 years old might be one of/if not the youngest HC’s in the FBS.

Congrats to him, hope it works out for him, but really tough act to follow being the successor to Brian Kelly.
@Liberty City El - I hadn’t heard of this Freeman guy until you brought him up a week or two ago. When I started reading about him a bit - you were right he’s been pretty impressive. I was sure ND would pull Fickell and then Freeman would end up HC at Cincinnati. Honestly based on his track record I wouldn’t have minded him at the Canes - but at the same time I don’t really want a rookie head coach though either. Apparently this guy is a monster recruiter.

Well, OU had Bob Stoops before Lincoln (OC), who retired after going 11-2 and winning the Sugar Bowl. They were in a great position.

UGA let Richt go after they went 9–3 in the regular season and finished on a four-game winning streak. That's what Kirby stepped into, with a very talented roster.

Even Clemson won 9 games the year before their mid-season coaching switch to Dabo.

None of these program were "down" or in distress.

I would also say that ND has one of the most respected AD's in the country (barf face). All this said, who knows? Every hire is a crapshoot. But the industry loves him and he's well-respected. This isn't a giant upset.
