Manny and the Canes may have had the best 2019 of any Program not situated in Death Valley because, unlike Mark Richt, Coach Diaz recognizes that the College game has become very much like the NFL in the past year with the introduction of the Transfer Portal.

The bidding war over Jalen Hurts was a prime example of how players (and let's be clear, their unofficially hired agents who are guiding them) have been empowered by new NCAA regulations that ease transfer rules for players while allowing one institution to pick up the football scholarship that had been carried by the previously attended university. The new rules also cut down on the ability of the Nick Sabans of this world to treat their players as indentured servants. Saban was notorious for penalizing his guys when they tried to transfer.

Diaz recognized that the deficiencies in Richt’s recruiting game could be compensated for in this way. Clearly he is looking at the Transfer Portal the way NFL Coaches look at Free Agents. Because that’s what these kids have suddenly become: FA’s.

This makes it very, very important for coaches like Diaz (among others) to keep this Program wound up at a Playoffs or Near-Playoffs level every year. People don’t have to stay here. They can go to Trailerhassee if that program starts doing real well. Or UGA. Or Clemson. Coaches will start poaching players from troubled programs (this may be why Saban is moving quickly to clean house). So while we are benefiting from this new environment, the Program must produce results at a high level. These kids will go elsewhere if victories don’t happen. Because now they can.

Manny saw this coming before any one.

F'in brilliant.

He knows a lot of the core of that 10 win season is still here... and we’ve done nothing but add talent including upgrading the QB position from that season since being hired

Manny knows he needs to win quick and big because he knows fans and the BOT want results

Who didn't?

True, but nobody inside the building was willing to be as honest as the fanbase. That’s part of the reason things got so bad. Mark was really a nice guy and had donated money to build the IPF. Only the Wisconsin fiasco got things moving.

I don’t think that Richt had Manny’s insight. I don’t think had he stayed, you’d be seeing this kind of free agency going on. In fact, we’d be seeing Canes players entering the window to play elsewhere.

I hear you. However, Manny is only doing what he always did as defensive coordinator. Every year he brought in a graduate transfer. Year one it was Adrian Colbert, year 2 it was Dee Delaney. Year 3 it was That Tito guy from Illinois. No one should be really surprised. He is applying to the offense what he always applied to his defense.

if you're not utilizing the portal, you are behind the times. And in my view, Miami, because of its location, tradition and other variables, will be a preferred destination for those looking to enhance their collegiate experience

Yep, plus the bags issue is much less of an issue with the portal than it is with HS recruiting. Entirely different program.

All of this just came together at the right time - the portal opening up, the change in the coaching situation, Manny portaling back to Miami bringing the S & C guy, releasing all the O staff, etc. It's hard to say it's not a good idea to go after transfer kids when your getting your coaching staff the same way. It's supply and demand and the free market. Couldn't be more American and productive. This will also reduce the importance of going after youngsters to verbally commit in grade school. You can still work that angle, but recruiting is really going to depend on where you stand in December.

What we’ve learned is that a program doesn’t have to be at a playoff level to pull transfers... just the illusion of being a few players away from being playoff level is enough.

Anyone notice how many players the final four teams from this year have acquired via the portal?

I believe it’s one combined and that player was a whale.

The portal isn’t the way to build or maintain a program. That formula hasn’t changed in decades and it won’t change because of thes new rule changes.

The portal doesn't solve the complete mess the 2019 class is in. You can't have that many holes and then turn around and call it a successful 2019.

The hype is good ....still gotta put it together on the field tho..I believe you don't get too high or too low stay even ....let's just hope they're ready to take that next step..

The portal brings parity, levels the playing field somewhat btwn the haves and wannabes bc of myriad of issues.

Miami is a destination city, so the Portal should help us a lot. Say you were a 4* sitting at a big state school... the pull of Miami might be more attractive your 2nd time around, with state college lifestyle blinders off.
