Manny era defensive numbers

Wait?? Is this what all this is about? The whole point was our def v. the type of schedule we’ve had has been anything but elite. We haven’t been playing any world beaters.

The SOS was a final, non prejudged, that did not include any FCS teams. I’m just trying to understand the angle you’re trying to present.

Your original point was that our defensive stats were padded by poor competition. My point was our schedule wasn't that different than anyone else's out there, including the contenders.

You then said they went 39-3 which isn't the same thing as SOS. Those teams routinely way, way, way more than we did in any given game.

Clemson typically have a strong SOS when it's all said and done (and I know their CFP games/Championship games are included in this matrix)

My point was routinely, even in our own division, our SOS has been soft, period. Clemson's schedule was weak this year and they dominated it; but Clemson's schedule was also composed of one G5 and one FCS team, while we had two G5 and one FCS school on our schedule, and honestly, this may be why our SOS falls below others in our division. Outside of 2017, we've been scheduling two G5 and one FCS school on our schedule; so couple that along with playing in a weak division, and that's how you get great def stats against a weak SOS.

Let me be clear; Diaz is the best DC we've had in a long time. Under Baker, we took some steps back. However, I'm not of the mindset that Diaz is the defensive genius, either. I think he's good, and playing in a division like ours have made him look a lot better...that's OK, b/c we need to take advantage of our schedule; but the fact that we haven't, whether fans want to point to a stale offense or the defense giving up leads as to why this has happened, I just feel it all needs to be fixed.

I just don't like the fact that the defense continues to get a pass when it needs improvement, as well. That was my whole point of bringing out these stats;

If we could average 30ppg against p5 competition we would win 10 plus games every year. Manny's defense isn't perfect but it's good enough if the offense can pull it's own weight. Hopefully Lashlee's spread will have a profound effect starting this season.

In my opinion Football Outsiders do the best job of ranking/analyzing the offensive and defensive production. I pulled together their data for 2012-2019 and added it to a google sheet, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10gi9g8G_543jnGjelqR3DTIe3dQWPjDEobNqrhBPCtA

I have it filtered down to just Miami and Clemson as a point of comparison for “championship quality defense”.

The overall rating is adjusted for strength of opposing offenses, but there is a breakdown item by item of how the ranking is calculated. All based on per drive basis, so takes out effect of spread Ds having to take the field more times.

Short story, big improvement across the board in 2016 when Diaz took over. 2017 saw a big jump in TO rate. 2018 was the best D and was approaching “championship quality”. 2019 was a regression across the board and the worst D since Diaz stepped on campus.

Only 2018 approached Clemson’s rating since their shots at titles started in 2015.

Diaz really needs to figure out how to get back to 2018 performance on D to have a shot at knocking off Clemson.

I think most here agree defense needs to be better particularly in certain areas. Bottom line is under Richt and last year the offense was the achilles heel. Have an offense that has a pulse any improvement on defense would be like ice cream on the cake

Lots a variables to consider with SOS just being one of them. I think our D played on it's heels a lot due to our O not being capable of scoring enough points. Not saying our D was elite but it was good enough to win the Corstal.
