Manny are we ever going figure out what filling gaps mean

One of the big runs to start the second half(the one that got them to the one yard line), Hill beats his man straight away and is gonna blow the play up. The OL hooked him around the waist right at the point of attack and allows the RB to break the run.
There was another chunk play where Greg had a sack but the OL grabs his shoulder pad and yanks him back.

I know holding happens everywhere, but when it is right at the point of attack and you can see a defenders momentum stopped dead by it, it shouldn’t be missed.

Let's give Louisville some credit. They have run the ball well against everyone they have played including ND and Clemson.

I am the op of this thread and there are a lot of things improving but regarding this phase of our game this is not about Louisville and it goes on Lets just stay in a traditional 3/4 and keep it simple. We overplay too many situations which is even brought up by natl broadcasting teams. This is on scouting reports.

OP found out what “filling gaps” meant in county lock up when he borrowed 2 packs of cigarettes.

Or setting the edge, getting up field on jet sweeps and swings passes to RB and protecting the first down line on 3 and long. Finally, stop sending the blitz looping around the DE, send it inside and force the QB into the arms of the DE's.

i think the biggest weaknesses of shaq and pink have been instincts and consistently cutting outside angles on stretch/zone runs. Pink loves to gamble and so it pays off sometimes. Shaq is just slow-it is what it is. But both have been net positive for a long time here and I don’t want to speak poor on either of them.

my hope is that the new guys coming in will be more athletic which could/should help us take it to the next level

Honestly Louisville has the fastest back Miami has gone against this year. That dude had a gear that was nasty.

I agree though and I think coaching is to blame here. It was painfully obvious they were going to run the ball but Miami never played it. Stayed in base and tried getting upfield every play. Thats fine if they are coming with some passing plays but it was so obvious what they were doing.

There comes a time when you have to adjust and put a stop to things.

Our defense is not about lanes its about shooting gaps and causing negative plays, which we do pretty well. However, the other side of that coin is we might give up big plays. If u want a bend but not break defense Manny isnt for you.
That’s not true at all. Regardless of what your scheme is, gap integrity is paramount. Yes we shoot gaps and create disruption and chaos but once we lose our gap integrity or a linebacker doesn’t fit right it creates cutbacks or giant *** holes. We did a very good job against Pitt, FSU & UVA being gap sound while still inducing chaos. We were ok for the most part against UL but they were so fast to the perimeter I think the LB’ers were trying to jump the play and over ran their assignments at times.

I remember a time when Miami had lots of gap integrity. In fact, each man was responsible for two. No thanks!
