We should get a 12 decal on our helmet. Dude was a true Cane and will always be a true Cane.

Had the same surgery. C 4-5-6. Titanium plate and screws. Still have tingling and numbness in the left arm and hand. The spinal column isn't something to take lightly. I had to wear the collar Malik is wearing for 6 weeks. The day I got home from the hospital, while wearing the collar, I tried to lay down in bed and was blacking out and felt like I stuck a finger in a light socket. Serious ****!

I feel for u arizona. I was 22 when i had my first spinal surgery, felt great for about 5 years and nothing but pain since. Luckily mine is lumbar/sacral and not cervical....i can't even imagine what you and others go through on a daily.

Prayers for Malek making a full recovery and being able to enjoy the rest of his life. When one door closes, another must be opened. I'm pulling for the kid.

great to see surgery was successful. now he can finish his degree at the premier school in Florida. as unfortunate situation as this is, this is exactly why you pick the school for the school and not some position coach you like while being recruited that will unlikely be there to see you graduate.

Don't say it's not a family. Godspeed to Malek

Nowhere is sports is there anything that touches the Hurricane Family. It has persisted even though these horrible years so it is not just good times. It is beyond belief. Get well young brother, you will always be one of us.

Back pain, upper or lower, is the absolute worst. Once you’ve dealt with it, you never take it for granted nor even consider doing something that might reinsure it.

8:38 is the play!!! Thank you Malek for the memories kid. We know you will succeed outside football. Made the cane family proud. :neonu:

Thanks for posting this to let me relive the game. Can't wait to play those dipsh.ts again!

And watching Malek celebrate that INT...such mixed emotions. The defensive performance that game was the high water mark of the season, and the celebration after his INT was among the best. But then thinking he has no idea at that point that he has only one and a half month of football left. Makes you realize you have to enjoy every positive moment you have. cliche maybe...but that's the feeling I get watching that!

It'd be nice if Canes fans could get together and do something for the young man. He isnt a student athlete anymore so thats not against the rules is it?

I had a fracture on my L5 and 3 bulged disks and have trouble sitting or standing for extended periods. The spine is very unforgiving

SIAP I went back and watched the game as I was curious how he was injured. It was really a freak injury. It happened on the kick off following our first TD. Up until that point he had only played a handful of plays as he was coming in on 3rd downs.

The play was pretty much over and he hit his guy face mask to face mask in an innocent looking block, and he fell to the ground oddly. The camera then went off him and you didn't see him again until they showed him walking to the locker room later in the game. Anyway, I know some posters were wondering when it happened and once again SIAP.
I don't remember the play, but it's just crazy to think that he was able to walk to the locker room afterwards. I was thinking it had to be a Ryan Shazier type of situation where maybe he went down and they cut to commercial break and just never talked about it. It's a violent game, I hope Malek recovers in due time and can live a normal life.

Prayers to that young man. The true definition of a CANE. Nothing like CANE family.
