Luke Nickel last night

Need to see more. He had some nice plays on the move evading pressure.

His deep ball has been underwhelming. The pick had way too much air, missed one earlier to spafford. And last year he had a deep pass that left me saying wtf?

But, too early for me to decide. He has positives and nice tools. Want to see him with an oline that can give him a few seconds (2nd string oline wasnt impressing me aside from Hawks).

That’s what he looked like in the Spring and in the Fall.

I don’t know what about the coverage he saw that triggered a deep shot down the sideline into double coverage, but that’s what he’s been doing in practice.

He doesn’t process fast enough to make plays like Ward, Beck, and Mensah.

He also doesn’t have the arm strength to overcome that limitation at this level.

He’ll be another JAG that gets processed and leaves.

Would probably need to be a Ken Dorsey situation. Once Kenny Kelly got injured Dorsey never let go of the job. Nickel taking over for an injured Mensah and playing solid, is the only way I can see us not continuing the portal QB carousel.

If he’s Ken Dorsey or Steve Walsh, shouldn’t that be enough, or have the defenses changed too much where you need a Ward or a Mensah with a WR room full of Greek Gods to get you to the Promised Land?

Too small of a sample size to draw much of a conclusion on his projected status for next year.

But he can throw, isn't panicky under pressure & has a nice arm.

I'm still unconvinced he'll be the starter next year. I would wager we hit the Portal again for best QB available.

Malik Washington, Austin Simmons, Brad Jackson & Drake Lindsay will all be viable options.
I'm a big fan of Malik.

I wish you all the best but there's no way that he's going to satisfy after what we've been seeing. Those are the cold hard facts
you are totally right. cam ward was a 5 star out of hs and so was darian mensah.

wait, they werent

any chance we can see if fhe actually plays more and we see anything before we destroy him. we saw 1 quarter from a former 4 star mr georgia. if that is all we see, then you're right, just not going there after a few series jfc

I bet by next year Nickel or Coleman could win a lot of games for us as a starter

But we are hunting championships. OSU hitched their hopes to Sayin and he folded against us because he’s not a playmaker. We’ve set the bar too high for Nickel to be the guy
maybe but its way too early to bury him either and assume he can't be. maybe he can't but i dont know from last night or "camp reports" - the same camp reports that told us our OL was dominating on run game only to be better in pass pro last night

All I know for sure at this point is that Nickel shouldn’t have been charged with an INT last night. That Stanford DB clearly did NOT catch the ball. It was literally rolling around on the ground underneath him.

🤷

Luke needs to play most of the next game, if at all possible. He needs to figure out defensive stunts, etc., in a live game. If we can send him in right after the second half kick, that would be best. Kid needs time and game snaps to work on his timing and accuracy.
Do you really think you learn anymore from FAMu than you would from a Green Tree practice?

I wouldn't say I'm destroying him I just have a real strong suspicion that's all

Agreed. Nickel looks legit.

I just hope we get to see Coleman reps Thursday instead of wasting snaps on Judd.

As for the talk of Alabama, and Georgia, our OC heavily recruited two quarterbacks who won three championships for those schools; and neither guy was a blue-chipper (Stetson Bennett and Mac Jones).

Only way Nickel is never a QB1 here is if Coleman beats him out next year. Our staff makes certain decisions and sticks with it i.e. not grabbing a portal TE or portal C this past cycle. They said they won’t get a portal QB, and I see nothing changing on their stance.
Stetson Bennett turned into an assassin the likes of Baker Mayfield. Confidence goes a helluva long way in CFB

I don't think Mario is lying about staying in house for QB next year. He has now said it multiple times.

Maybe its because Nickel is really promising and cemented to play, but I think its a mix of Nickel, Coleman, and Abrams all looking very promising. A full competition will bring the best out of the three, and whoever takes the job will be very very good by the time our season starts next year.

Also, our offensive line next year should be elite. Any QB would look good with the amount of time we can give them.

More blowouts upcoming will help Luke develop with more live reps.

Need those game reps to truly evaluate what we got there.

Glad Mario allowed Dawson to keep calling the offense with the backups in
And that was the problem with the lower performing teams of the past. When you’re trailing or only up by one, your backups seldom get in aside from injury. Great teams blowout their opponents, and that gives backups plenty of opportunity to play.

Trumpycane knows it was a small sample size but he looked competent

Made 2 pretty good throws moving and showed some zip

INT was just a good play by the Stanford guy, honestly like he dropped it but it what it is

Trumpycane knows it’s a low bar but he looked way better than Emory ever did
The interception was because he tosssd it in double coverage .
