Here is what we saw and what we heard on Brewer.
What we saw: Brewer is listed at 6-foot-5, 225-pounds, and he has filled out his frame well. He's a fluid athlete with great ball skills and the ability to high-point the football well and make plays after the catch. I like his physicality on both sides of the ball, as he plays defensive end and tight end for the Warriors. Brewer went out for a number passes, but was also used primarily as an in-line blocker, where he showed the ability to drive defenders and get to various blocks. Latches on well and has meaning behind his blocks. Strikes the defender well. He'll need to improve more with his separation and route-running ability, but he shows the athleticism to get yards after the catch, which is a big plus and showcases the athletic traits he brings to the table. He has a good chance of being a very solid power-four football player. He is fairly lean at this point and will need to fill out, but he looks the part as a high school senior right now.
What we heard: Iowa is making a big push for Brewer, and the Hawkeyes want to get him in the fold. Miami making the trek up to Iowa City is telling, and the 'Canes are considered by most to have the edge right now. If Miami wants him, which it seems like it does, then the 'Canes are considered by most to have the edge at this point in time. Iowa and
Iowa State are still making a push. The Cyclones were at Norwalk last week, while the Hawkeyes have the tight end tradition to boast and were at his game this week, though the consensus is that everyone is chasing Miami (FL) right now. Brewer was also seen sporting Miami (FL) glovees on Friday night. That doesn't always matter, but it seemed telling to me with both the Iowa and Miami (FL) coaches there.
