Louisville Post Game Plus/Minus

i count six on the left side of the line

To me this play (and plays like it, which occur multiple times every game) epitomizes the stupidity of our coaches. They have 6 guys to the left of the center. We have 3. They have everyone except the qb and rb on the line, we have 6 guys in the box and 5, yes 5 ******* guys off the line in the secondary. They are in goalline mode, we are in regular defense mode. It's fourth and 1. How can this play, defended in this manner, ever be successful for us? It can't. It's over before the ball is snapped.

The problem is that this exact play, where the offense lines up in goalline short yardage mode, and we don't counter with more guys on the line, happens every single time it's 3rd or 4th and 1. It happened multiple times tonight. It happened every game last year. It's not some one off aberration. Our coaches are doing it over and over again and aren't correcting the mistake.

This game came down to the two fumbles in the red zone. How we only come away with 3 points is unreal. Terrible play calling

That is it in a nutshell. We scored 3 ******* POINTS with two turnovers inside their 10. You've got to be ******* kidding me. GAME OVER

I said I was concerned about the oline many times first when I realized none of them were at the top In strength for the testing chart. Second I seen nothing on the videos that said awesome oline. Third we lost alot of talent two o lineman starting on the nfl. This is going to he a long season if kc, Trevor or sunny don't emerge.

That, the penalty that killed dukes catch and KO return.

I disagree. Flip coaching staffs approximately 3 months ago and I think we watch a very different game.

Yup...I'd argue this game was decided the moment Penn State decided to go another direction.

Whoever thought the phrase "It's a canes thing, you wouldn't understand" could refer to our own program, this **** is pathetic.

Seeing it live, it's not the players. Maybe they don't execute the play all the time, but the plays are retarded. I think we have the horses. It felt like we did at least. We weren't out matched physically for most of the game. Our offensive play calling was awful and our defensive alignments are retarded. Same players, different plan and this game is different. JMO.

The offense was ridiculous. I was telling you guys. Fisch 10x > Coley. Coley doesn't set up his plays. Call a bunch of random plays. Great recruiter but that's it. There is a reason Duke had a bunch of catches under Fisch and 4 under Coley last year.

Not many are refuting that...however, those 4 instances had relevant significance. Your point stands though, overall coaching, preparation and execution. 3rd down and red zone was an embarrassment....And that's being charitable.

I'll tell you guys the play where I lost my God **** mind.

On that second down play after the turnover when we were in the red zone....UL had NINE guys in the box. Kaaya barked out false signals and finally ends up looking over to the sideline for Coley's check.

So after UL shows it's hand the freshman QB turns to the OC for the check...and the check is a running play into a NINE man front.

We have the worst coaching staff in America. I have little doubt of this.

That's far too courteous of a summation. You could play the "yeah, but" game and still end up with a logical flaw that belongs to a professional being paid to do a job.

I agree Lu but could you elaborate? In my gut I know what it is but I'm too ****ed now to try to articulate it. Would rather read your thoughts right now.

All I know is that might have been the most **** poor excuse for a D1 offensive coordinator that I have ever seen. The incompetence on this staff is truly astounding.

I get it. Those were the noticeable turning points. But, really, it was almost immediately that I noticed we were going to have the same problems. After having a month to prepare for last year's bowl game, I saw virtually the same offensive and defensive sets with a rare wrinkle.

After having all mother****ing year to prepare for this game, I saw some delayed blitzes, almost nothing new from the offensive play calling (or sets!), but the exact same principles.

It's late. I've been drinking and I haven't rewatched the game. But, going off memory, we played virtually the same style and within the same philosophy that has terrified me for years. I'm not just jumping on a "hate Golden and crew" bandwagon. I've been worried for a long time and have probably started 40 "worried about this philosophy" threads. We can talk all about it tomorrow, probably. It all comes down to risk aversion. We're limiting our potential. Again.

* We've got posters on this site nitpicking Florida State. Respected posters. Literally watching play after play in desperation to find some vulnerability in Florida State. Based on where we are and where we've been recently, why do we care one iota about Florida State?

* Once again we underestimated this opponent. How? I saw posts in the prediction thread pegging Miami for 40+ points. Meanwhile, Louisville was in the top handful of the nation last season in yards allowed per play. That category has a high correlation from one year to the next, if you are among the best. It means you have recruited well and maintain defensive intensity level.

* It was a poor situational spot, traveling to play an opponent who just thumped you in a bowl. Before the schedule was released the one thing I didn't want was an early assignment at Louisville. At least I cashed my first half Fury of Anti Revenge bet on Louisville. That was hardly a given, considering Louisville's horrendous first half field position. Our defense is not as good as it looked, partially because of that favorable field position in the first half. I'd estimate that fewer than 2% of games unfold that way, with a team averaging a starting position of basically its own 10 yard line for an entire first half. I'm not counting the possession with only seconds remaining in the half.

* Kaaya's arm was unimpressive. I won't go too far in that regard before a greater sample size. But there was no hint of a whip. Troubling. Quarterback arms generally improve in the NFL among young guys who mature and receive higher reps and year round training. In college the arm strength normally doesn't improve dramatically. If Kaaya's doesn't improve, our windows are limited. Regardless, the looks need to be downfield. I thought opportunities were available early when the game was still tight and Louisville was cheating forward. Quick play action and aggressive downfield looks could have worked. Kaaya isn't a guy who can succeed via 7 step drops and delayed decisions into coverage. Coley and Dorsett can release and be targeted on decisive play action with short drops.

* The parallel pass plays are garbage, as I pointed out in a thread touting them many months ago. Work in a sports stats office charting every play and you'll learn to differentiate how those finesse plays fare against varying caliber of opponent. Next week against Florida A&M they'll ramble untouched. Only ignorant coordinators and coaches use those plays in bunches versus top teams. You are begging to be obliterated near the line of scrimmage. If you are going to show those looks to a top team, the design needs to prioritize the downfield offshoot, like Oklahoma State burned Florida State for a deep touchdown. Alabama is also occasionally fooled by that play. It only breaks open once per game against that level of attacking opponent so the timing and situational choice have to be perfect.

* I'll mostly spare the defense even though I doubt it will produce that type of effort repeatedly. I despise our version of the 3-4 because there's no substance. Bigger interior guys. So what? They aren't special. Expect too much and they'll deliver too little, like as the game progressed. Too often the matchup is terrible, like Louisville's first touchdown play of the second half when Chickillo at right end cheated inside and was wiped out toward the middle, allowing a simple touchdown gallop with nothing but a skinny standup backer flanking him. I still ache for the disruptive 4-3 with no adjustments or excuses.

* Somewhat disappointing game from Dallas Crawford. I expected at least one splash play. But Deon Bush was far worse. Notice how badly he misplayed the final Louisville touchdown, assuming it was a run and being left in the wake as his man instead burst into the clear. Crawford glared at Bush after the play and gestured into the air in disgust.

* I won't bother with my normal practice of saving the tape and reviewing every play, looking at linemen. I assume the right side of the offensive line was awful but I didn't spotlight them often enough to fully judge. Frankly, after that dual rape episode this summer I'm not as interested or concerned as normal. Besides, the Beckham stadium situation fell apart. That was a huge hope, albeit a longshot. I was so envious of that opponent tonight, with their own college-sized stadium and actually doing card stunts.

so many great receivers on this and where are they? Does Coley have any concept of spreading the field? Jesus.

Kaaya should have been operating from the shot gun and spread them out. UL is not winning more than 8 games. It's the same thing when Maryland beat us and won 2 games the whole season. We gave their QB easy throws. Their CBs jammed the **** out of our receivers. We are doomed with these coaches. Doomed. We have alot of talent on the team. Alot. At every position. Where was Howard and Bush? We do not stand out and we have alot of great athletes. They do not have an attacking mindset. We are in trouble. Gosh our season is over before it starts.

Exactly. We play like robots, no fire, no passion, no emotion. Been that way for 4 years. Hate it.

I love Coley but OP nailed it, looked like Lance Leggett tonight. Welp.

Our team got straight punked all game long. There is no passion, fire, fight, dawg or balls on this team. Louisville was talking **** to our team all day long, trying to start a fight and we just backed down with our tails between our legs.
