We already know the guys that will be lining up for the position in no particular order:

Butch, Schiano, Chud, Mario.

That is great we have guys that want the position tomorrow if they could. But lets hold the breaks on these guys until we know who else would want the job.

Sam Jankovick probably had the best interview I have read regarding how James should go about this search.

You have to make phone calls to good coaches even if you think there is no chance. You never know who would listen and then decide they want the job. These days with message boards and social media I could see plenty of coaches in a comfy gig not reach out because it could get out so easily. It is a completely different story if we reach out to them. They wouldn't look like jackasses (Golden PSU fiasco) if they are lobbying for a new job then end up back at their respective place.

It is gross negligence to not at least call Patterson, Gundy, Peterson, and Chip Kelly (why not). If we truly would pay 4M all these guys would take a serious look. It is more than all of them are being paid currently except for maybe Chip and it would be understandable to be paid a little less on the college level.

If Butch isn't a viable option in the minds of the bozos making this decision, I hope they don't limit themselves to "Miami" guys. However, I would not be shocked if they did.

I hope that's a normal process! Any AD and admin that didn't already have their guy in target before firing the existing coach should take this approach. That's Elementary! Personally, given for a long time that there was a high probability Al would be replaced, I would have already had my guy in place or a short list that I could finalize the choice in a week. Jank ain't dropping no knowledge, although he did well by us.

If its any Miami guy - it s should be Butch...

And quite frankly he should be the only Miami guy if they go the Miami way.

I agree on this but Butch will be negatively recruited against in so many ways:

Age- Do you want to go play for a coach that will be up for retirement in 5-6 years? While this upcoming class and the next wont mind it will come into play in 2 years

Scandals- UNC academic whether he had anything to do with it or not. He was there when it was found and players of his were suspended.

Been out of the game- He hasn't coached since 2010

I just think his age is the biggest factor unfortunately. Its reality and Miami is not in the position to take a chance on someone his age.

Since Butch evidently wants the job, the other "Miami" guys should be out of the picture. None is a better option than Butch (particularly Mario). It should be Butch or an outsider, and they should be aiming high with the outsiders.

That is all.

P.s., please give Jim Leavitt a call. Don't care if it's for HC or DC position. He'd be a good candidate.

Ok. Thinking outside the box...other than Butch, Herman, and Fuente, I would most definitely call Mark Dantonio, Patterson, Gundy, and even Doc Holliday.

If you want to go outside the outside of outside the box then hire that hs coach who goes for it on every 4th dwn and onsides kicks every kick off. Can't think of his name but I'm sure some others have heard of him

Let's remember a couple thing about Sam. Sure he was best AD we ever had but wow that is a low bar. He didn't go out hunting for JJ is some daring exploration. He ran into Jimmy in an elevator while chasing another candidate. Ole Sam asked Jimmy, "you think _______ would like living near the water?" JJ then basically did a Coach L. "I like the water. Offer me the job." That was Sam's great "looking everywhere". Then Sam found us the Coach that left us in the biggest ncaa scandal until Donna's. JJ and Dennis were the beneficiaries of a common denominator -- Butch Davis recruiting. Butch recruited for Jimmy. Jimmy still took until year 4 to figure out how to win a Bowl Game so he could cash in on Butch's talent skills. JJ took our boy to Dallas with him but they left Dennis with what was at the time the finest collection of talent ever. Dennis sloshed his way to 2 more NCs before he ran out of Butch's boys.

Then Sam and Dennis run away leaving no talent and the Pell Grant scandal. Who cleans that mess up? None other than Butch Davis. Who then out does himself and gathers and ever great collection of talent under a real live actual nuclear winter cloud. Yet another coach gathers a NC with Butch's players.

You can make a very sound argument that Butch's recruiting skills not only gave Miami 4 National Championships but also made Sam's reputation and gave JJ and Dennis NFL HC jobs. All three of those guy should be lining up at Butch's feet shouting "We're not worthy!"
