Bump this question. That's what I am wondering too. The way it was presented it made it seem like we were missing on great kids other schools had interest in. IDK - asking the experts here....

Some people think Mirabal and Martinez are UM caliber, some people don’t. They both have some impressive offers from Big Power 5 programs. That could be who they are talking about. Janvier also has some Big power 5 offers.

He looked impressive physically at the opening but struggled with some of the quicker defensive tackles.

Yes, I think you are right about these guys. I knew their names from some of you posting on this board. I cannot remember who, but at least one of them - either Mirabal or Martinez- was told they were going to be evaluated during their spring ball. Maybe both of them.

What is worse in terms of the community perception of Manny and staff and may even affect future recruiting:

- don't offer these local kids that others P5 schools offer (whether they are actually able to commit to those schools or not)

- Offer them because they are local but slow play or even not accept their commitment if they try.


It seems like the staff is in a tough spot in either situation.

I graduated from there over 25 years ago. Our campus was never in a strip mall. Always had a decent size campus on 109th and NW 2nd street, maybe 15-20 acres. The school you’re alluding to was a degree school that opened up and used multiple private school names. Florida and Dade Christian put an immediate stop to them using their name. Miami Christian on the other hand didn’t do **** and allowed them to tarnish their name for a few years. Decent academics, no where near a Gulliver but I had classmates go to GT, Wharton, Michigan and obviously UM and the Turds. Also had a few get a full ride to the State Penn, so there’s that.

When I first got there in the late 80’s, we were competitive in 1A football, but nowhere near even a Gulliver or Belen in Football. After I left in the early 90’s the football program really started to deteriorate and they shut it down in the late 90’s. This is the 2nd time they try to restart the football program. First time they went cheap and ended up folding it again. They sold a piece of their property a few years ago and I heard they decided to use part of proceeds to restart program in 2017. This time they got smart, Hired Nick Turnbull as HC, gave him a good staff and had him recruit a whole new team of mostly underclassmen. Last year they won districts and advanced pretty far in the playoffs. Now this year they added some studs like Britt, Janvier and others. They appear to be taking a page from their very successful basketball program.

FYI Champagnant has been around for a long time, since the 70’s I believe. They just didn’t have football team until the 2000’s.

Yo @TRick72 I am a mighty mighty Victor too, class of '93 what year did you go? LOL Had Coach Boyle my first year on the team, and then got stuck with Coach Armstrong, depinga. My only claim to fame was getting my *** kicked by Andre Wadsworth, and some other less notable plays there lol

For those unaware of what that means, most of the players started on both offense and defense. I get the perception Manny isn't getting into the emotions of the local coaches and playing that game. He has more of an IDGAF attitude and is only offering Miami caliber guys. He has been pretty clear there is a standard at Miami and he's holding people accountable for playing to it, and it seems like he is trying to recruit to that as well. If he doesn't feel you're Miami caliber he isn't offering regardless of local pressure or perception. Now it's easy to do that right now when you haven't had to coach a game and had recruit guys after losses and what not, but I don't mind him going with this approach. He's not going to let the locals dictate who gets a Miami offer or not. No matter how much whining Uncle Luke and some of the other coaches do on Twitter or in the media.

If I'm a local coach and Manny is at least honest with the kids that's all you can ask for.

Outside of Walker and Denis who have our offers and have visited us, are any of the other guys miami caliber?

Not mention, but I would say Gerald Mincey from Cardinal Gibbons is good, and is probably a better overall prospect than Dennis at OG. For Tackle I really don't know besides Isiah Walker and Marcus dumervil, we might need to go OOS for tackles.

I like Marlon Martinez a lot. Holds is weight very good and has a 4.69 shuttle, that shows quickness for his size and position.

I agree with your observation and that honesty is the best policy to avoid a political quagmire and upset the wrong people. As long as there is communication throughout the process with the kids/parents/coaches, the timing of a "committable" offer really shouldn't matter. If a kid says he really wants to be at Miami, but he isn't given a committable offer until "late" in the process and decides he is too butt hurt to wear orange and green, I say that kid didn't really want to be a Cane.

It was at Northeastern University, where Frank Martin was an assistant from 2000-2004. During his time they had a pretty big South Florida presence on the squad with JJ Barrea, Adrian Martinez (Goleman HS) Marcus Barnes (Miami High), Sylbrin Robinson (Miami High) Cornelius Wright (Miami High), Javorie Wilson (Miami High), Shae Pinckney, Gene Oliynyk (Northwest Christian by way of Ukraine) and Bennet Davis (Northwest Christian by way of the Bahamas). I think I have a pretty good idea who your cousin is....

Yeah I immediately knew who it was when he said he graduated in 93 after having come over from Belen. We are actually really good friends, done some damage at games together just never spoke about being on the board. Agree it was pretty cool.

I must be thinking of somewhere else. I once dated a girl from Champagnant in the 90s and that's all I got.. I went to Palmer (turned into Palmer Trinity) and we played them in basketball, baseball, and soccer but never football. When I was there in the early 90s I don't even remember them having a team.

Yea I went against Wadsworth in football and basketball. In '92 he was a 185 lb WR and in '93 he was a 230 lb MLB/TE.. then in basketball season he would slim down to close to 200 again.. hmmm...
