I saw a post by @TouchMoney26 and it made me think: we know that certain players are hyped before they even play for our Canes. The streets know who are the ballers. Of course, not everyone pans out. I live in Phoenix, AZ so I am well out of the loop of Florida youth and H.S. ball. What is the difference between the street hype for Malachi Toney vs. Nick Lennear?

I'll add that if No-cut Nick can be half of what Malachi is, we'll be cooking with grease.

We are cooking with grease! Hes not baby jesus but he is a more twitchy mark pope.. in other words he will be what Mark pope was suppose to be but more juice and passion

Mali has been a local star for a long time. He got the baby Jesus nickname in optimist. But i think nick has more hype in highschool, probably because he didn’t reclassify

As far as players mali is way better even as a highschool prospect imo..i know the hs rankings says otherwise and it could be looked at as recency bias but mali skills and fundamentals as a 9th grader was high level. Alot of people in real time thought he would end up better than his teammate brandon innis

Agreed, I think the reclass had alot to do with it even though Mali was like a social media star in a way due to Optimist following and such..

Appreciate the input. I am curious to see how the whole 'creation of a legend' continues to evolve. Growing up in the Bronx at a time when pagers were a thing, you would hear about some local b-baller and how much game they possessed. One would hear about Kenny Anderson, Rod Strickland or Earl the Goat and It would almost become mythical. Today, social media obviously changes how far and fast a message spreads but reduces some of the mystique IMO.

The ranking for Mali was incomplete. He was a mid to low level 4 for the 27 class. When he reclassed, he dropped to a high 3. Who knows what would have happened with him this cycle. My bet is that he keeps producing and move up the rankings. Players fly up rankings every single year out of the blue and he was already on the radar.
 
Nick is stamped down here in every football circle. Universally recognized as next up.

Mali was called Baby Jesus before middle school. People have been calling him the next one for about 10 years.
