I know this is a thread that often pops up during the offseason, but why not now?

How/why did you become a Hurricanes fan and what was your first game?

I was born a Cane. My mom's side of the family has lived in Miami since the 40s and has been going to games since the 50s. Both of my parents also taught at Miami at one time or another. I didn't have a choice. I grew up in the Orange Bowl (had my Bar Mitzvah party there, and Melvin Bratton was one of the guests).

My parents told me the first game I went to was in 1982, but I was 3 and don't remember. The first game I remember going to was in 1985 against Louisville. I don't remember much about the game, but I remember going. The first game I remember a lot from was the 58-7 win over Notre Dame in 1985.

Miami Oklahoma 86.

I remember parking for that game in a "No blocky" driveway and walking to the OB. There was that gas station across from the north side of the stadium and we saw a big crowd there. Apparently the line for the ladies room was so long that an OU fan went into the men's room and Miami fans were pounding on the door. When she came out she looked terrified.

First game I attended was the FSU game in 2002 with my dad.

“He missed it….WIDE LEFT”

Only sports team I follow. Love this program so **** much.

I had already moved away from Miami by '02, but was in grad school and drove down for the game. Almost died of heat stroke, but it was worth it.

Dad moved to Hollywood from up north in 1977 and fell in love with the Canes. Was at the 1983 championship against Nebraska. I was born in ‘82 and brainwashed immediately. Even playing sports my whole life, the only thing I really cared about was the Canes on Saturday.

I think my first game was in 1988 or 1989, I can’t remember. I need to ask him.

Had my first son in 2023, and his name is Braxton Cane.

There’s not a single thing on earth I love more than this program, which is incredibly disturbing for a middle-aged, (allegedly) otherwise normal human to say, but I’ve accepted it. There’s a 100.0% chance I’ll cry like a baby if we do this next week. Beyond embarrassing, but I’ve poured so much time, thought, money, and emotion into this nonsense, I just can’t really articulate what Monday night will be for me.

We are truly sick individuals.

And I love it.

I started tearing up at the end of the Ohio State and Ole Miss games. My 10 year old didn't understand, but I told him that one day he would.

Grew up blocks from campus. Used to hear the marching band practice on the IM fields the day before the game. JJ and his staff would jog by my house after practice ended (would typically be outside to wave to them). Grew up going to games at the Light (free entry after the 5th inning!). First OB game was 1987 ND.

That’s awesome. I haven’t been overly emotional yet, but it’s probably because I was at both those games and, while absolutely a cavernous *****, I’d like to think I’m able to keep it together in public. For now 😂 😂

I was born in '82. My older brother was a ND fan. Had to have been the '87 or '89 Miami-ND game that started my fandom. Probably just rooted for Miami to be a **** and **** him off. Good enough reason. Still do **** to him for those reasons to this day. 35+ years later was a great decision.

Go Canes! Beat IU!! Win #6!!!

Born in Miami. Grew up in Hollywood. My father was the Orange Bowl Stadium Manager from 1960 to 1979. I decided I wanted to play football when I was 10. My Mom thought it would be cool if I could go and watch a Canes practice. My father called Coach Tate and asked if I could come and watch.

Coach Tate said it would be OK but I had to watch from the stands so I didn’t have any chance of getting hurt. I was absolutely blown away and have been a Cane ever since.

Enrolled in 1977. Kinda vaguely knew about the Friday night home game tradition - beating Texas for example. Lou Saban arrived just before I did.
When we lost to *osu in the 1977 opener (10-0), my OSU-grad Dad said “you guys have s pretty good team”. Lou really laid the foundation, and I got to see Howard push it forward. Jim Kelly came to a party at my Building 22 apartment and one of his OL broke my speaker after getting rejected by a girl. Art Kehoe (no comment) dated my next-door neighbor.
High point for me of my student years was driving up to see the 31-7 beatdown of the Gator in Canesville in 1980.
Cane for life!

I was 11 years old and living in Ann Arbor. I had been going to Michigan football games with a friend and his dad since I was 8 years old … and I thought that style of football was so boring that I really did not enjoy college football. But I loved the NFL and the Steelers and wide open passing attacks. And then I stumbled upon Penn State v Miami and I saw Jim Kelly throwing the ball all over the place and I saw what college football could be.

Then a year later I watched Kenny Calhoun deflect a 2 point conversation attempt and Miami won a national championship. And I never looked back or wavered. Miami was the most fun college football team to watch. And they were brash, and they were a city team, and the rest of the country hated them. And I was hooked.

And I vowed then and there to go to school at Miami.

Can’t remember the exact year but sometime in the late 70’s (1978-79). Miami played FAMU at the OB. FAMU won that game but I was very impressed and surprised that a predominantly white university would schedule a black university for a football game. FAMU had a pretty good football team, great alumni and fans presence in SoFL. But Schellenburger sealed the deal for me becoming a fan when he started recruiting the area. And been a fan since.

What made me started going to Miami games was when they beat this Semi pro team called Overtown Bucktown I used to play football for…For those cats that don’t know Semi pro football was very popular in the area and all the teams was owned by some of the biggest “hustlers”. Bucktown was one of the best and well known semi teams in Miami. I remember playing Miami jv at this stadium I think was the Orioles MLB team summer training facility. I tell you what, we were kicking Miami jvs butt until after the half we noticed that a very good amount of the Miami players doubled in size and displayed some very impressive football skills 😳 I think they beat us so bad that I had to show my support and start going to games 😎

Go Canes
