Let's revisit the Manny hire for the 1,000th time

I like Fleck. Clawson has worked miracles at Wake and Sean Lewis is going to be a really good HC. Those are three realistic hires we could have hired. I wanted Leach but that was never going to happen nor was Butch.
I like Clawson a lot...

But who SHOULD we have hired?

Don't forget all the Dino Babers chatter before Manny got the job. I think he had potential here, but honestly I don't see anyone (including the GOATS) getting much out of our situation.

Other names, the head coach of Army or maybe Matt Campbell?

My short list no order...

Les Miles
Chip Kelly
Bob Stoops
Kevin Sumlin
Josh Heupel
Mario Cristobal
Butch Davis

Regardless of flaws any of these choices are better than Manny Diaz.

Edit: forgot about Babers definitely better than Diaz

No telling who would've actually came because we didn't bother to call anybody besides Diaz.

That’s my only beef with this moronic Athletic Department with the hire. Why put all your eggs in one basket with out doing your due diligence? Blake didn’t even give it more than 24 hours to decide. Furthermore, if I’m the President (his name escapes me) I would have stepped in right away and told him not to be impulsive and do your homework. Truth is, Blake James wouldn’t be my AD if I were President but that’s neither here nor there.

Somebody who will have his team playing disciplined and fundamentally sound football. He also will make the correct hires and do what’s best for the program. If Manny turns out to be that guy then awesome.

I highly doubt Blake James even asked Manny any questions other than do you want to come back.

Manny may end up being the guy, he may not be but the coaching search (or lack thereof) was a joke.

I was all in on wanting babers for the 9 hours our HC spot was open..how realistic would that have been..no idea. But I thought he woulda killed it here.

Bill Bedenbaugh. He can recruit, runs a great offense, o-line guru.

The more I watch CFB, the more I wonder who we *realistically* could have hired as HC in late December that would have been a 'home run' by most folks' standards. Some of the candidates that were discussed:

Mike Leach - 3-2 so far this year included a blown 30+ point lead to UCLA at home.

Mark Stoops - 2-3 start. Likely peaked last season with an upperclassman-laden roster.

Butch - Retread at this point. 1-3 record. May very well not make a bowl this year in the Fun Belt.

Mario - This is who I wanted we hired Diaz. 3-1 and probably should have beaten Auburn. May not have left Oregon anyways due to Herbert coming back and the Nike money. May very well get to the Rose Bowl this year will be interesting to see how he fairs with a new QB next year.

Heupel - UCF has dominated opponents sans the Pitt game but Frost left the cupboard pretty loaded.
Frost leaving the cupboard loaded at UCF is a hilarious take...dudes have like three 4-star players on the roster...Lmao...It's called coaching and scheme, getting the most out of the talent you have on the team, coupled with playing in a shït conference

I want Diaz to regroup, win at least 8 games, recruit like mad, and finally and most importantly, be even more ruthless this offseason with holding onto coaches who aren't performing up to what we need. Manuel does all of this, and he's my guy. However, for the sake of this thread and having to wait two weeks to see my team play...

Here's who we should pursue if we have a losing season and Manny loses the confidence of the fanbase, the BOT and his team: (not in order of importance)
  • Bronco Mendenhal(SP?) - Dude has taken a relatively untalented UVA team and quickly turned them into a disciplined, well-coached, tough group of winners, who will probably beat us unless we can get a combo of Enos and Butch pulling off some major adjustments.
  • PJ Fleck - Been a fan since his WMU days. He's turning Minnesota into a winner.
  • Still think Mark Stoops is worth a look.
  • Butch - I still don't care y'all think about him. I believe he's in better shape than UNC's coach and if he had the U's flag to fly, he could do some real damage and at least right the ship.
  • Babers - He seems to really like it up at Syracuse and the pressure is not him there like it would be on him at the U, but that guy would turn us around. If I were ranking these, he'd probably be at the top or close to it.
  • Frost - Yes, I understand that he is a Husker and that this is his "Dream job," but take it from me on those "Dream job" situations, they don't always pan out the way you want or expect. As I mentioned in another thread, he is landlocked in a state with no elite talent. He HAS to go outside the state for talent and Nebraska's brand has faded as much or more than the Canes. Unlike the Canes, who will rebound as soon as we get a decent coach because we are in the most talent rich part of the country, he doesn't have that luxury. I would take Frost in a heartbeat over nearly everyone on this list with the possible exception being Babers, maybe.

This is an awful list perhaps with the exception of Bronco and I can't see him ever coaching at a place like Miami.
