The more I watch CFB, the more I wonder who we *realistically* could have hired as HC in late December that would have been a 'home run' by most folks' standards. Some of the candidates that were discussed:

Mike Leach - 3-2 so far this year included a blown 30+ point lead to UCLA at home.

Mark Stoops - 2-3 start. Likely peaked last season with an upperclassman-laden roster.

Butch - Retread at this point. 1-3 record. May very well not make a bowl this year in the Fun Belt.

Mario - This is who I wanted we hired Diaz. 3-1 and probably should have beaten Auburn. May not have left Oregon anyways due to Herbert coming back and the Nike money. May very well get to the Rose Bowl this year will be interesting to see how he fairs with a new QB next year.

Heupel - UCF has dominated opponents sans the Pitt game but Frost left the cupboard pretty loaded.

Clawson, Sean Lewis, **** maybe even PJ Fleck

And, for the thousandth time, the result is still 2-2. Sometimes, hiring a coach is only a part of the equation. Admin, recruitment, coaching staff, all account for the success/failure of a coach. It is only a once in a lifetime find like a Saban, who can affect everything around him to his vision.

Love the revisionist history on Clawson. Guy was 28-35 in 5 seasons at Wake coming into this year which is nearly identical to Al Golden's record when we hired him. I'm sure that would have went over well. Sean Lewis is 4-12 at Kent State so i'm not sure if you're being serious. As for PJ Fleck, if #TNM annoys you, I have no doubt that his 'Row the Boat' schtick would too.

There were no realistic hires, only fantasy hires by CIS. Any other chatter implies there was a short list of candidates and a national search. There wasn’t. Blake James spent more time working out how to buy out Manny’s contract with Temple than he spent searching for candidates.

My god 4 games in with two losses to a Top 10 team and another team that Clemson beat by a point by a combined 7 points

At least wait for us to play VT and UVA
That's what i'm saying! Please - someone find me a realistically better hire that we could have made. Gary Patterson would have been an interesting name but I doubt he ever leaves TCU. Sonny Dykes has SMU competitive again but he was damaged goods before this year. Mike Norvell was in play at a bunch of P-5 schools the past couple of years but seems to like it at Memphis and re-upped. I love Kyle Whittingham but he's been at Utah for 25 years and is mormon so I couldn't have seen that working out. We could have gone the top coordinator route but isn't that was Diaz was anyways?

But who SHOULD we have hired?
Not my job to know what candidates are out there; it's Blake's. And the fact of the matter is he was negligent in not having a shorlist ready in case Richt left.

But if you must know I'd say you gotta at least call Urban Meyer and make him tell you no. Matt Campbell out of Iowa State. Mike Leach has been begging forever to come to Miami.

Blake said at the intro presser that Manny was the only person they targeted but that was only after he said after Richt's resignation that a 'national search was going to be conducted'. I think that's why a lot of people, including myself, aren't huge fans of him. I still believe that Mario was the first call that was made and he turned us down given what he has now at Oregon.

It's not hard to gauge what's out there and separate fact from fiction. There was no chance in h*ll that Urban was coming here. Matt Campbell may never leave Iowa State unless the Ohio St. job came open. Read my OP for my thoughts on Leach.

I'm not saying that Diaz was the best hire Blake could have made, but I have a hard time finding an exponentially better candidate that would have realistically considered us given the circumstances.

I like Fleck. Clawson has worked miracles at Wake and Sean Lewis is going to be a really good HC. Those are three realistic hires we could have hired. I wanted Leach but that was never going to happen nor was Butch.

First good name I've gotten in this thread. I'll be interesting to see if/when he leaves UAB given their backstory.
Excellent coach. I made a couple of posts about his qualifications when the "search" was being conducted. He has been a winner at every level, does more with A LOT less, and even though he lost 9 starters from his defense last year he has his team at 3-1 this year. The guy can flat out coach and he would be considerably less expensive than some of the other talked about candidates.

Oh and we play UAB next year. Will be interesting if he is still there.
