I did NOT know that Gary was the grandson of Dr. Ashe, the first President of the University of Miami.

Yep, played on some horrid Carl Selmer teams.

People say that last year was our worse in "modern" history, but I can attest that 75 and 76 were worse. It got to the point where the school was seriously considering dropping the program ala University of Tampa. But good ol Henry King Stanford (who was a football fan at heart) pushed for one last chance and brought in Lou Saban.

Back then we were a junior college team with a half dozen D1 players. Lou was the first coach to recruit and actually field 22 D1 plalyers.
He laid a good foundation for Shelly, who build on that.
 
Ocean View or OV in the Keys is a great spot. The original got blown over in a hurricane and they re-opened on the other side of the island. So technically, it's a "Bay View".
 
Harold Allen did great work. His is a name nowhere mentioned enough in Canes Lore.

Gary Dunn was an important part of those Steeler DLs - the top unit on arguably the greatest team(s) ever fielded.

i went there once in 2004 when i was a student and well before i was really aware of much in terms of canes history. gary and dennis were both there, saw i had a canes shirt and spent 15 minutes chatting me up on canes history even though i admittedly didnt really know who they were. even gave me a free beer. amazing dudes.

1997 was as bad as last year. The Big East was absolutely horrible that year. Best record in the conference was Syracuse at 9-4 that got embarrassed in the Fiesta Bowl. They embarrassed us at home. Virginia Tech had the second best record in the conference at 7-5 and lost to UNC 42-3 in Gator. Now that was Brown's best team but still. Of course, the 47-0 game at Doak where Covington was sacked into the back zone goal post was about as bad as it gets.

1997 was worse.

The 1997 COACHING was better, but our team was at its lowest numbers, and had no chance to win more games.

You could say that 2022 was more DISAPPOINTING, but 1997 was a worse team, from a talent/performance/capability standpoint. We had no chance in 1997.

In 1997, we needed double-overtime to squeak past Boston College. We beat Temple and Rutgers and Arkansas STATE. And we beat Baylor when they were terrible.

Here are our 3 conference wins in 1997:

Our three conference wins in 2022 were against:

VT 3-8 (1-6 ACC)
GT 4-7 (4-4 ACC)
UVA 3-7 (1-6 ACC) It took 4 overtimes to beat them.

The 1997 team was completely depleted and really had no chance against some teams but at least they fought. ****, they outscored opponents on average 28.5 -25.9 Edge went over 1,000 @6.0 ypc and James Jackson averaged 7.3 as a backup, so at least they had a good running game. They got smoked by FSU and lost by 20 to Syracuse but the rest of the season was at least competitive.

2022 team got outscored by opponents 26.8-23.6 and gave up on the season. They got mauled by Pitt, Clemson and FSU on top of losing by over 20 to Duke and 14 to Middle Tennessee.

Coaching was definitely the difference between the two. The 2022 team underachieved terribly and the 1997 team probably got the max out of their squad. All things being equal, the 2022 team probably beats the 97 team but the staff in 97 did such a better job with the poor hand they got dealt.

I was taking a Micro-Econ class at Miami-Dade North back in the fall of 81 when on one occassion we
had substitute professor who was rocking Dunn's Steelers' game jersey. This professor turned out to be
Gary Dunn's Mom and it turns out she rocked the jersey on fall Fridays before the Steelers played.
Nice lady.
On several occasions we chatted about Gables, UM and Steeler (my fav team growing up) football.
Never met Gary but he apparently stays in touch with many of his Steelers' teammates, calling Tunch Ilken's
sports talk show radio in Pittsburgh.
Several years ago a Steeler buddy called to tell me Dunn told Ilken all football fans welcomed at his restaurant
in Islamorada to talk football except gator fans......lol.

Yep. It's like voting on which of the two are the ugliest girls in the school. They're both excellent candidates and both uglier than 2022 no matter how disappointing 2022 was.

Very true. The point I was making is that some posters just declare "2022 was the worst UM team ever" and have no perspective on prior seasons.

Anyone who stayed late at the GaTech game last year knows that there were a lot of players on the team that played hard and were grateful for the fan support. You could tell that they knew what a disappointing year it was, and how much they were chafing at the poor coaching.

I'm still made about the dump they took at Homecoming last year, but there are always some players who give it their all, even in the midst of a disastrous season.
