Last Night's Solid Win...But We Need To Talk...

And again, nothing about our drives was "conservative". We tried to throw the ball all night and failed. If we actually would have played conservative football we would have scored more. Throwing stalled more drives than anything else.

Why is throwing always seen as not conservative? Why did we go away from what was working? What were the adjustments?

The feel for the game still makes no sense.

Same thing was said about the VT and Cal game, it’s different we don’t come back from those.
I would say those were very different games and you could feel our defense going g off the rails. The ol is getting consistent push against solid defenses. And this defense looks different than what we had last year.

My point was this thematically...

For 5 drives, our Canes made some progress, controlled the ball, etc.. etc...but came up with 0 points.

Nada.

Was it a passing game let down? Run game let down? I dunno.

But from the overall strategy of winning the game, the Gheyters were still very much alive until that score at 4Q/4:11.

Did it feel like it though? Nope. Our Canes were dominating them up and down, but they were clinging to 7-13.

Like the O last year with heroics that masked let downs on D, last night was tbe inverse.

2001 Miami did same thing against BC, but it was a one off. I'd look to last night's Offensive doldrums to also be a one off.

Go Canes.
Well said.

The first quarter pretty much told us all we needed to know. At no point last night did I feel the game was in the balance. I think the only question that needed to be answered was by how much would Miami win.

Except for one drive, our D-line completely dominated that game. Since we're playing the "if" game, if you take away uf's first drive (80-yard, TD drive) of the 2nd half, they had 10 other drives throughout the game, where they ran a total of 41 plays that amounted to 61 yards of total offense.
61 YARDS!!!!

Miami's D dominated this game. Have pretty much done it all season. Except for last night, our offense has been pretty good as well. I'd like to also think last night's offensive performance was a one off. Keeping things in perspective, our passing game didn't fare well against a very good defense. A defense that could possibly be the best one we face all season.

Looking around college football, this is a team that could very well be competing for a national title barring any major injury (knock on wood).

Last year we were 14th in time of possession at 32:33 minutes a game, thru 4 games we’re 5th at 35:29 minutes a game. A 2 minute difference so
What makes this year mario ball and last year not?

Our offense just was super efficient last year we averaged 42 points a game while having the ball for 32 minutes per game. We suffocated teams offensively..We know in football to have the ball again after you scored the defense has to get stops..We just got killed by explosives too much but there were good stretches by the defense last year

So OP is correct we will need to finish drives with points more often if we plan on this formula getting us into the playoffs. And what we’re seeing now is more than likely what we are as a team like it was last year, im cool as long as we keep winning

CJ Daniels was wide open for a long TD on one play, but Beck didn’t see him, he instead threw a incompletion, I expect a Veteran QB like Beck to see that play, on the interception to Cormani he didn’t lead the receiver enough, I’m sure he’ll see this on film and get better
You’re thinking of two different plays, beck was targeting cj in the cormani pick. CJ was wide open on the play where he held the ball too long for a sack i think

Wait……

This board consistently makes fun of Mario, claiming that he wants to run it 50 times a game, but now you’re saying that throwing incompletions was actually being conservative and trying to run the clock?

That doesn’t make sense, and I’m pretty sure you know it.

Thanks. You're right, should have gone for it on the 4th & 4 in 3rd Q, but definitely should have run the ball on 3rd and 4 there.

1st one I get what you're saying, but UF had 18 yards of total offense at that point when we punted, and I don't think Coach was wrong to think, "hey there's 8 min to go before the half, and we're getting the ball to start second, if you're going to score against us before the half you're going to have to start from at best your own 20."

We had moved the ball with ease to that point too, as long as we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot with presnap penalties. It worked too, we lost 2 yards of field position but gained a fresh set of downs in the process. Then proceeded to have an absolute clunker of a offensive series for the first time, lol

They gained 2 yards in 6 plays after those punts and we ended up getting a FG (should have been a TD) before half. I'm fine with it the way the defense was playing in the first half.

The one in the 3rd Q we shoulda gone for it after running on 3rd, especially since by punting the first two times near/in the back half of the second quarter it made it super important that we get points on the first drive of the 3rd Q. Don't think it's shocking UF managed to put together one drive after having a half to talk about what just had happened when they had 22 yards of offense in the entire first half.
Talk about UF's TD drive for a moment...

totally different 2-teams...they marched right down the field in decent chunks...D couldn't get a stop a looked out of sorts...

So then all.of a sudden Gheyters stop "doing what works" and Miami's D made magical adjustments rest of tbe game?

I agree - unless you do insane tempo you are only getting 11-12 drives per game and that shades down a little for end of half drives where you kill the clock. So, to be in the 4th quarter with 8 drives in the bag and only 4 trips to scoring position and 13 points is not a recipe for winning a lot of the times. I know the conditions and the D was killing their inept O… but they punted from the UF 46, 47 and 39. If the Florida O was so bad they could have pressed the advantage except the first two had false start that moved us to 4n10 and 4n14 but that 4th and 4 at the 39 just blows my mind.

Of course, right on queue the Gators march down the field and it’s a one score game, then the pick and now the Gators have a chance to lead a game they are supposed to be getting an assist whooping in. But in Mario world we have had the ball for 36 minutes it’s just too bad that doesn’t count when we tally up who won and lost. It’s not how long you have the ball but what you do with it.

This and RCT are the only Canes boards I’ve ever been on Corky Cane. I’m bored with you. It’s not fun beating up on retards.

People argue about slinging it vs running -- when either needs to be productive. Can't disappear for 2 quarters. Feel for the game. -2 yard pass, 3 yard pass, 3rd and long incompletion and punt... appears to be passing to pass ... but not down field... went back to the run game, dominated them, ran the clock out -- exactly like we should have.
