Last Night's Solid Win...But We Need To Talk...

It’s not “running into the line” it’s the conservative run out the clock from kickoff, limit possessions, coach not to lose that people are discussing …

When it works it works, when it doesn’t it lets ND and UF back in the game.

But that isn't what happened. Go through the drive chart and show us the drives where we just ran it into the line to run out the clock.

Also not trying to be negative but the punts inside UF territory was so *****. That o was dead to rights. Should have been four down territory. Until someone shows me we can consistently down it inside the 5 on a punt

You don't give a terrible offense field position at the 50, especially when your own QB isn't playing well.

I literally just said it isn’t about running it into the line, it’s the conservative mindset. Which has been and is the case. When it works, it works, when it sputters, it sputters and lets teams back in the game.

I was fine with the first 2. Case could be made we shoulda gone for it on first drive of second half though. First two were 5 and 9 yards to go. Third one was 4.

We had proven we could move the ball into their territory with ease. Finishing drives not so much Not worth the risk of giving a team that couldn't get a first down a short field, IMO.

We needed to execute downing the ball better. They got 2 touchbacks they shouldn't have and the second one was a big mistake. If Day downs that ball inside the 1 like he should have we probably shut them out.

And again, nothing about our drives was "conservative". We tried to throw the ball all night and failed. If we actually would have played conservative football we would have scored more. Throwing stalled more drives than anything else.

We will do a hot wash of what happened yesterday and why it was closer than it needed to be or should have been, and to me, the culprit is the playcalling. We got cute when we got up early. I’m a big believer in keep doing something until your opponent stops it. We were moving the ball well with running the ball. Sure they would stack the box, but we were still getting 3-6 yards a pop. And those body blows were taking a toll (which would show itself in the 4th).

But we could have expedited that by staying with what was working, especially given the circumstances (weather, rbs running hot, UF dline weakened). It was a game we didn’t need Beck to force anything, yet we were trying to, and with route combinations that weren’t putting the right tension on their cover 2 shell.

I suspect Dawson will own the struggles and come back with a game plan that better takes advantage of what the defense is giving us as well as come up with better route combos against FSU secondary who will almost assuredly attempt to copy UF coverages.

Personally, I’d like to see more counter runs, seemed like those always had success.

My only personnel question is this - what is the story with Bauman? Is he the best blocking TE? Seems like he ran wrong routes several times last night and I don’t remember noticing him on run plays. Was this just a bad game for him? Or should we start to give a few more snaps to Lofton and maybe the freshman - I seem to remember one of them was more of a blocking TE?

Since I'm an empirical kinda gato (the timeframe I was trying to politely* discuss)...

My only two ******* at this point are

1.) bauman needs to be benched he’s awful at blocking and in the passing game. I’d rather see schott or Gilbert learning and getting better.

2.) best 5 on the field and Brockermeyer isn’t one of them… killing drives left and right. Ryan Rodriguez work on those snaps buddy

I really want to emphasize that it was raining through most of the game. It absolutely poured for about an hour right before the game. I think the combination of Florida being very good defensively and the weather being bad for passing the ball is skewing a lot of people's opinions.
I agree. Usually the rain doesn’t affect the passing game this badly. The ball was definitely slippery (PAUSE) and hard to throw and catch last night.

agreed more well put than my bluster. Idk how we don’t know to be in front of the endzone to down the ball

This fan base needs shiny objects like "up tempo" and "creativity" to keep their attention. Beating the mess out of people on the lines is boring to this group, even though it is the best path to winning.
“Some of the fan base” is more accurate. Most of the fan base is on board and aware of what’s happening. Believe what you will, but Miam’s fan base /alumns are knowledgeable and articulate. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and so do the ignorant mopes. Set your hair on fire, it’s a 3 alarms, comb your hair and it’s business as usual. Attention whores gotta *****. Wanna spend your time and money there , have at it. Just don’t include the rest of us. Contrary to your opinion, most of us are more discriminating in ours of this team. # CANESNATIONLIFER.

Wasn't Bauman "Green Wave All World"?

He cheeky cheeks (so far).

Ya'll don't want to hear this, but this needs to be said...

Last night's W was great for sure, one that Miami has struggled to get consistently for years and years...however...as with last season's VT and Cal games, this contest could reveal a big problem if Miami doesn't get fixed immediately...

The W against Florida wasn't secured until about 4:11 in 4Q. Despite the stats column domination by Miami, Mario Bro Ball failed to put points on the board w/ only 3/8 (38%) possessions (at that point) putting ticks on the scoreboard. The defense, like the offense last season, had to put forth heroic effort to keep Miami in the game.

Think about this...IF Miami has a miscue on the drive that put them up 19-7...and instead of scoring they fumble, failed to move sticks, etc...and then give ball back to Gheyters w/ 5-ish minutes left...

Gheyters find their footing and march downfield (just like they did 3Q) and go up 14-13...this morning is a VERY different CIS...

Does Miami have a 2 min offense to get the job done??

Now Empy, If my Aunt had a crank she'd be my Uncle right? Give yer balls a tug and enjoy the W! I get it, but remember the cracks, the big cracks, were there against VT and Cal and Louie Louie that basically telegraphed the outcomes of GT and Cuse to us...we just have to watch and listen.

Again, great dub dub by our Canes...but keep your eye on possession-to-points conversion rate going forward. Mario Bro Ball is awesome controlling clock and playing keep away, but one of the Achilles heels is if you don't score, you leave yourself very open to your opponent stealing a W at the end if they hang around just close enough...don't kid yourself...that could very well have happened last night and that drive re-establishing momentum to go up 7-19 could well be the most important drive of the game.

The Miami Hurricanes' motor is running, but the staff and players must refocus and get on the timing on cylinders set or this team is at real risk...

But I agree. We will likely have games when the offense will need to bail out the defense. But we aren’t there yet.

What was problem with routes?

WRs had off night?

Were Gheyter DBs just better than we thought?

Lofton played well...the other TEs...hard to see how they are contributing in positive way right now...

Had the officials not blown dead a 70 yard TD run, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Instead of 20-0, it quickly became 13-7.

Thanks. You're right, should have gone for it on the 4th & 4 in 3rd Q, but definitely should have run the ball on 3rd and 4 there.

1st one I get what you're saying, but UF had 18 yards of total offense at that point when we punted, and I don't think Coach was wrong to think, "hey there's 8 min to go before the half, and we're getting the ball to start second, if you're going to score against us before the half you're going to have to start from at best your own 20."

We had moved the ball with ease to that point too, as long as we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot with presnap penalties. It worked too, we lost 2 yards of field position but gained a fresh set of downs in the process. Then proceeded to have an absolute clunker of a offensive series for the first time, lol

They gained 2 yards in 6 plays after those punts and we ended up getting a FG (should have been a TD) before half. I'm fine with it the way the defense was playing in the first half.

The one in the 3rd Q we shoulda gone for it after running on 3rd, especially since by punting the first two times near/in the back half of the second quarter it made it super important that we get points on the first drive of the 3rd Q. Don't think it's shocking UF managed to put together one drive after having a half to talk about what just had happened when they had 22 yards of offense in the entire first half.
