Bored at work and depressed with this signing class, so I decided to look back at the recruiting classes going back to 1999 (from 247 composite rankings). It's made me even more depressed...

So you're saying that Al Golden has the 2 lowest ranked recruiting classes nationally and in our conference in the last 17 years? #Trendingup

amazing the similarities of Shammin and Folden
the records are scary, and with the added year, not just the totals, but how they both peaked in 3rd year
cannot fathom year 5...

God, I cannot believe college football will be a bust before it begins this coming year.
what was once a ritual of 2o plus Saturdays, is now filled with trips to Lowes and "family" outings
coker to randy to al - 50 year low

At least the 2011 class had a legitimate excuse for Golden -- just started, didn't have a full year, and the "cloud" made its first appearance. But that just makes this year even worse...

All you need to know about class rankings is right there. 2008 was ranked #2, and #1 by many. How did that turn out? And 2010 was top 14?? That's beyond a joke right there. Some good players, but 10 tons of roster chokers.

Not saying this class is as good as it should have been, because obviously it's not. However, don't kid yourselves into thinking some of our past classes were half as good as their rankings. Most of those classes, in hindsight, should have been ranked much, much lower.

Also, that class Butch brought in was epic. While the #1 ranked class by Coker.... Well...... Complete disaster of a class. Again, rankings mean very little. We need a coach that can get the most out of the talent they bring in. Coker, Shannon, and Golden aren't the guys to do that.

I've seen a lot of the boys from those classes you say should be ranked lower, playing on Sundays.

And I saw far, far more that either never contributed here, or SHOULD never have contributed here.

WE haven't won 10 games in 12 years but according to our fans we should have a fence up in SFLA...

Wow. So much wasted talent. Really illustrates how poor the coaching has been for the last decade or so.

For most of those years, based upon talent on paper, no excuse why there weren't 10 wins, especially playing in the ACC.

I think the thing to take away from the rankings is that they are an outside perception of the state of a program and its players. We fans know much more about a particular recruit or player than the ESPNU talking heads. But, the scouting services view some players as better than others, and the teams that land them are generally considered stronger than those that do not. Sure, there will be teams that perform much better than the rankings, but there will also be highly ranked teams that win national championships. I think our rankings are frequently better or lower than they really are because we are sitting next to so much talent.

The cloud appeared AFTER the 2011 class. The cloud came to fruition in August of 2011 which would've affected the 2012 class and that, ironically, was Golden's best class.
