Can definitely be fixed, it’s not like he just getting overpowered. He seems to not know what he’s doing, too many false steps and taking himself out of position. For him, it’s imperative he’s in the right position so he’s not putting himself at a disadvantage from the beginning. He’s not a behemoth and use his length to help himself recover once he makes a false steps.

SJ is an interesting player, he’s smaller, but really athletic. When he does get his hands on another player he holds up fine. You see it in his pass pro. Not a road grader by any means though.

The top 10 OL by mid season will be Pancake, Buchanan, RR, SJ, McCoy, Hawks, Congdon, Cantwell, Wilkerson, and Woodrow. The guards are just young and they will have to grow up quick, all 4 have potential though and can contribute.
 
I think people see that SJ is relatively small, then they see him whiff on a block and attribute to his size. His issue is mental errors.

In terms of physical attributes, he’s got good feet, and his size allows him to play with leverage. When he blocks the right guy, he wins the rep, especially in pass pro.

I think Mario/Mirabal went with the best pass-blocking combination because we have a Heisman-caliber QB and an embarrassment of riches at WR. The run game will be a work in progress all season as the mental errors get ironed out.

BTW that was pretty much what happened last year. Our run game didn’t really take off until the CFP.

100% he showed improvement in our last game, yes, the competition wasn’t great, but that’s not his issue, it was mental errors and he cut them down the last game. He’s a powerhouse with really long arms, and when he gets his hands on you, he doesn’t lose the rep, he just needs to keep making the correct decisions out there and not allowing a mental error to take him out of the play. I think SJ’s gonna be one of our better guards this year once those things get cleaned up.
 
They clearly see something in cantwell to keep trying to fit him in even though he clearly is the worst of them. I’m not totally sure why they are putting so much into him and none into a swing tackle. I don’t see any other guards cracking the rotation. What will benefit the line most with this stuff is continuity and the last thing they need is another guard to teach. A swing tackle I could see just because they have more experience out there. Buchanan played better than I thought. The top 5 seem clear.
 
Confirms what anyone with eyes can see, 65 isn’t a starting OL on a championship level team. 76 is about a mid as you can be for a team with these aspirations. 79 needs a lot of work, but the physical attributes are there.

If you gonna be small atleast be the smartest guy in room and know what to do.. Small and dumb mistake filled who can get a player killed or knee blown.. How many mulligans does he get?

I’m rewatching the Stanford game when we went to a new 6 man platoon in the second half:

Samson—Max/SJ—RR—Cantwell—McCoy

What jumps out to me is how fatigued RR looks. He is not moving well AT ALL, and his lack of engagement on defenders foreshadows issues that happened against Wake Forest in the second half.

I’m far more concerned about RR. James Brockmeyer is a practice squad player and he felt like a massive downgrade from Zach Carpenter and Matt Lee the two years prior. RR isn’t on James’ level.

I know there was talk on Rhys Woodrow at guard, but we need Rhys Woodrow at center lol. There’s only one guy who misses their block and causes this to be a TFL: RR.

Mfs hating on Pringle and talking about arm tackles bringing him down: behold my wrath! Clearly eludes this arm tackle however literally what is he supposed to do here? RR left him out for dead, doesn’t even slow him down enough for Giard to be able to avoid the edge on the backside who didn’t bite on Spafford’s motion.

TLDR: RR makes our guards worse, and he may very well be worse than our guards. Haven’t watched all three games back but McCoy doesn’t even deserve to be lumped in with the other 3. He is doing his job, withstanding an illegal hand to his face-mask. SJ does better than Cantwell this snap; yet both are adequate enough Pringle had space to do his thing; UNTILL RR ruined the rush.

SJ and Cantwell hold their own on this rep, RR doesn’t.
 
Again, McCoy needs some respect put on his name. This is ridiculous. He’s taking two guys on by himself better than the interior 3 handles 2 rushers.

No exotic pressures whatsoever. They just bring 4, and we can’t handle that with 6 guys. Fletcher does a good job helping out SJ but RR — who again — just completely misses out on even touching a solo defender this snap. I don’t understand how indecisive he is when he literally controls the start of the action.

Thats nuts lol. Its a shame we cant just go eith a 2 man OL (Pancake and McCoy) and just add 3 more receivers to go for routes.

Is this play where Fletcher just let the guy thru for some strange reason? I saw him miss a block really badly in game. All 3 IOL got beat here and maybe Fletcher

Not that play bc as you see, Fletcher is touching the defender.

I know which one youre talking about, Fletcher just pulled off to the side from a LB charging right to him. Have to imagine that was a miscommunication or something.

ok, it kinda looks the same TBH Fletch looked like he had the guy lined up and just let him by. was so strange cause typically Fletch is going to make somebody feel him

Yea for sure it was a miscommunication. I believe on that play there was a DT stunting or something. He must've thought one of the IOL was going to pick him up and he gets the DT.

Like you said, Fletch isnt one to shy away from that contact.

This is the start of Max pushing his matchup into McCoy. McCoy gets pushed back, a tad bit, yet still holds his own. He doesn’t get pushed back because he can’t hold his own, he gets pushed back because the defender’s right hand is illegally attached to McCoy’s facemask on the play..

there was multiple times this happened and announcers said it was fletcher.
