Lamar Thomas on former players being embraced by Cristobal...

**** I know Golden used the "we are on probation" excuse and Richt probably just was too unaware to realize it and Manny probably was too insecure..but to go this long with former players not 100% feeling welcome is disappointing. Having former players on the sidelines was something we started at UM. Every other school started copying us. Glad we can start getting back to our roots and what made this program fun and feared.

Thank Jesus. You know I've been sayin' this stuff about the alums for decades...

Yeah, and I think guys like Manny and Alf had a vision of all these former players coming in and interrupting practices, showing up coaches, distracting kids, etc. While those may be valid concerns, I think it represents a very low bar of expectations of the maturity and intelligence of our ex players. They would know not to show up a coach or interrupt practice or distract players.

Just my view, but when former players go to practice, they really like to just lay back, talk to old friends, commiserate about good times, cut it up and laugh, etc, while not really wanting to be TOO involved (unless they were asked beforehand). For many of them it's about going back to a place and time which was truly special for them

That's what Ive observed at that one practice I went to in the spring. Like you said, these guys aren't dumb, they know they are guests and are very respectful of the surroundings

Yep. I remember a story that Litee (Tee 300) told from when his brother was on the team, and the DB coach was teaching something to the DBs, and HC Randy Shannon walked by and started contradicting it.

Right or wrong, those kinds of contradictions more commonly come from paid staffers, not proud alums swinging through the complex for a few hours.

Yeah, if anything, the former players are more likely to emphasize whatever the position coach is trying to teach and maybe just explain it in a different way.

To me it is an exclusive respected fraternity.
I am **** proud of all those older Canes walking the sidelines, and I know that they respect Mario and the team........... so it is more a gathering of older brothers who have fought in games, know what it's like, and want to relive that feeling when they see another player Cane or teammate..

Mario knows this, and fellas..........THIS is what Mario has called "The Juice", and it makes a difference to all on the team.
This act alone creates a positive vibe for our current players, former players, fans, and all who love and respect these former players.

I love it, and keep doing it Mario.

Manny especially more so than Al
Had no idea what he was doing and it felt like those guys were always tryna hide their practices.

Didnt they say that about the last few coaches at first though
They practically ran the same article when Richt got hired and then again when Manny got hired. Everything is always hunky dory before any games get played. Once the coaches loses a few games, that’s when things seem to change. Former players are still fans and there’s always going to be some that want to voice their opinions if things go sideways. Thankfully, we’ve got Mario and Alonzo and their names carry a lot of weight. So we’re less likely to see open dissent if a former player doesn’t agree with the staff’s coaching.

We’ve always heard that the players should “keep it in the locker room”. Being that Mario and Zo are former Miami players, I can see them and other former players doing so.

There’s a lot of coaches who don’t want to bring in coaches because they feel some type of way about them and they’re insecure and the coach might know more, but real good coaches don’t care about that. They want the best coaches in the building, they love their job and they go. It just feels really different.”

This is a straight diss on Manny. And I love every word of it.
