KR/PR Change Needed!

If we're just spitballing here, I would try (in practice as least) Chaney. There will be limited touches in the backfield for him and it's a way to get some burn.

Put Mallory in as PR and watch him toss bodies around.

Special Teams don’t matter?
The biggest problems with special teams have been addressed (punting and field goal kicking).

The question now is whether having a dynamic playmaker on returns matters more than fixing LB/CB. Most would say the second half defense against Louisville was an abortion and needs to be addressed first.

Yeah can’t address more than one thing at a time. Def forgot about that

Special teams matter bro. Field position matters. Returns for touchdowns matter. And obviously ball security matters.
See my response to Mr Dynasty. It's a question of priorities.

Pope muffed the punt bad against UAB. Everything Pope does on the field looks off. He doesn’t act comfortable with the ball in his hands. He’s not a natural catcher. It’s really a shame because he can look so smooth running at times. He’s lucky he’s getting an extra year with covid. I haven’t given up on him yet because you can see the potential.
Hall at PR isn’t ideal. Maybe if he’s got that Ed Reed in him you do it on occasion. He should never be full time starting at FS safety. That’s a position where you have to run constantly. It’s not worth him getting gassed and giving up a big play.
I’d like to see Restrepo, Clarke, and Knighton get shots. Prefer to keep Knighton on PR only. He needs to add some weight to be on KR duty. Restrepo on the other hand is already around 200lbs and kept his wiggle.
That tape with Clarke speaks for itself. He’s last on the CB depth chart. The coaches have no excuse not to have him taking serious reps at returner in practice.
i think Pope is scared AF to get lit up. Plus he has no confidence which is difficult to achieve when you are scared AF

I think eventually X and maybe even Rooster will be our punt returners but right now it is Noodles.
Hopefully he can improve a bit cause right not he looks average at best.

Pope just isn't a natural football player, imo. For PRs, I think the risk of a muff is real and if he does field it, I can envision him being tentative. Of course, he's certainly capable of breaking one but I don't think it's a good fit. Personally, I'd have these guys as our returners:

PR: Knighton
KOR: Knighton/Cam/Chaney

If Manny wants to leave Pope back there at punts for experience, fine, but give someone else a chance in blowout games.

I am still holding out hope for Pope to get things right at the WR position. However, I don't think he is the guy back there. He doesn't have the vision needed or the make you miss ability. Even on the ones where he has space he looks like he confused.

Maybe he is the most trustworthy catching the ball and if that is the reason he's back there then fine. I just think with guys like Knighton, X, etc.. we can find someone who can spark things back there
First and foremost, ball security.

Everything else is secondary, and quite frankly not necessary if they can't catch and hold the ball with EVERY attempt.

Pope will drop another twitter vid runnin' routes against nobody and his sheep will fall back in line

I hope you're being sarcastic. Very few things matter more than having a reliable catcher of the football as your punt returner.

I'm so old, I can remember a game against the Gators that was pretty much essentially lost when a punt returner we had named Jeff Thomas dropped a ball on our 10 yard line, gift wrapping the gators a touchdown and Miami a win. You should google it sometime, I'm sure it's in one of the old history books.
No I'm not being sarcastic. I've heard this before when Berrios was fielding punts.

"We need more speed".
"We need a playmaker".
"With So Fla talent, we shouldn't put up with this, we should 'feast'".

That's the focus. They want excitement, titillation, not reliability. That is until it costs us a game, then it becomes "Where have you gone Braxton Berrios".

Pope muffed one. If he does it against replace him with someone reliable. Easy speasy. If there's no one that can catch, we have bigger issues. In the meantime, put your attention on things more likely to cost you games like our defense.

Let's see what Pope does this weekend. On punts you need great hands and explosive upfield speed. He makes Roscoe Parish look big, so his size does concern me. On kicks, I like bigger with straight ahead speed. What about Burns back there, I thought he ran hard against UAB, but he is hurried right now.

Wow. Tough to be this dense, but bravo. Enjoy this thread.

On punt returns quick acceleration and lateral movement so important. Restrepo is much more able to meet those qualifications than Pope. Restrepo is much more physical in build and mindset. Timidity is not for any kick returner.

Wow. I can't believe you were looking in the mirror as you typed this.

Pope might be the most awkward D1 football player I've ever seen.
I'm almost positive that he's gonna get sawed in half on a kick-off return this season.

Put X back there on punts.
Bigger, more savvy and wayyyy more comfortable.
