Kosar/Cirrhosis of the liver/Parkinson's Disease.

****, just ****. I wish Bernie the best, had the opportunity to meet and talk to him multiple times over the years, just a solid guy. Loved picking his brain about football, he is a walking encyclopedia, and honestly, should have been coaching the moment he retired.

This is my problem as well. Watching the Sean Taylor highlights the other day I was loving it when he tackled guys high and then talked sh*t to them about coming over the middle. But then I read this about Kosar and it makes me pause as I think about the damage done to his body and brain.

I guess where I come down on this is that as long as people know the risks, then as adults they have the right to accept the risk. Kind of like smoking cigarettes. And it is hard to argue today that someone playing today does not know the risks.
They know the risks. Everyone knows football is a very violent sport with all sorts of injuries possible. Weighed against the possibility of making a load of money, the risks may be worth it.

You don’t get liver disease from concussions. Sad news all around.
He had many warning signs he chose to ignore and refused help and chose to an addict to alcohol.

I have no doubt he was told many times he had a fatty liver and needs a lifestyle change before his liver hardens and won’t filter anymore.

Now he’ll be on a filter machine the rest of his life till his body starts to shut down

2:54:50 "let's play football, we run right the fvck at'em" I loved hearing this live on TV and Bratton does his part

Some of the comments on here are tough to read at best and many are devoid of compassion.

it’s the internet, so I get it. Making prognoses that he won’t be here in a year and mentioning his alcoholism doesn’t change the outcome or diagnosis. Bernie is a legend and a fuggkin hero to a lot of people. Pointing out those other things - while true - is unnecessary. That’s all. Now go ahead and throw your rotten fruit at me.

Bernie's situation is rough. Hate to see it for anyone.

Some times it isn't as simple as "he is an alcoholic". Unfortunately a lot of simple every day "medicines", like Tylenol, can be deadly when combined WITH alcohol and can cause or magnify liver damage. Tylenol, that many people take for a "hangover headache", can destroy an otherwise healthy liver. Had a brother in law who passed away at 42 due to massive liver failure. He played baseball in college, blew an achilles tendon, and had pain for the rest of his life ... that he used TYLENOL to alleviate. He also drank quite a bit, but never was known as a "drunk" or alcoholic. Then one day he didn't show up for a dinner invite. We haven't had Tylenol in our home for almost 30 years due to that event. Hope Bernie is able to live, with treatment, and enjoy the time he has left.

Ok sure

Anyway when I was in high school and he came in as a guest speaker 20+ years ago and he was so hammered drunk he couldn't form sentences yes I feel completely comfortable calling him an alcoholic.

He's a Cane legend, he supported and loved his friends so much he went bankrupt and by all accounts a genuinely good dude. We can walk and chew gum simultaneously.

I am so sorry to see that the serious health issues have hit him hard and at least it is always important for him and his family to have a strong and good support system which will help him prolong his life.

My uncle died of cirrhosis of the liver due to his alcoholism. It is nasty for sure.

Brutal.

Bernie lived pretty hard on the bottle for a while and if there were pills and opiates involved over the years, that can increase the likeliness of Parkinson's—a family friend going through both due to a lot of drinking and pill addiction over the years.

Wishing this legend the best. Bernie's swag as a true freshman en route to a natty was something special.

I lost a younger brother many years ago and going through that process taught me a lot of things. One of which was people who've never lost a close friend or family member oftentimes say things that are best left unsaid because they don't really stop to think how the message will be received. I chalk it up to them not knowing any better. It helps my own mental health.

I have the online addicition specialists lumped into their own special category called the wrecktum for what they share in common.

Agreed.

CIS: A 12-13 head coach needs to get his head out of his *** and learn to kneel -- response -- **** you mope, you hate Miami

Also CIS: A Cane legend is practically on his death bed, let's wish him the best --- response -- he chose to be an alcoholic, so let's make sure to repeatedly point that out...

Fascinating..

And this is why I am looking forward to disappearing into the mountains one day after I change my phone number and do not provide a forwarding address. People are idiots and getting dumber fast. C'est la vie.
