Yes last year I cringed when he was on the field. Have to give credit where due though. So far this season he is not playing bad at all. Not at an elite level but at least serviceable. After all the hate here he does deserve a little love so far this season.

We have no one playing at an elite level right now.

How about blaming the current coaches for trying to convert smith to a LB last season and then letting him go after his great camp?

Cant use that argument. We dont know which recruit Richt gave the green light on. I mean we all would think that Manny could offer ships to who he wanted but that's not always the case. We also don't know how many recruits at what ever position that Richt also signed off on. Manny may have wanted 4 safeties in a particular cycle and Richt gives him 2. We just dont know.

But I do get what you are saying.

That is valid, but we also know that we struck out on a number of higher rated prospects. While it goes back to your point, we are also criminally thin at some spots for future years and never really had a wide net cast (mainly thinking of LB). We better make sure (and pray) that Huff and Brooks stay healthy and develop.
