Actually, I'm not judging Kirk O. based on his father's philosophy. I just don't think he would be the right guy if he has the same mindset as Tom O.
He can be judged on his own personal philosophy and performance.
I do believe Tom Olivadotti did a very good job with the defense in '83. It really was a good defense. I remember picking up the WVa announcers for the WVa-UM game that year, and they were praising our defense to the hilt. I remember one of the announcers saying "That's some kind of defense." It was very stout, and never quit. Still, I don't think Tom O's philosophy would be the best thing for us now. I think we should go back to the 4-3.
I would hope any philosophy of Kirk O's would be scrutinized to see if he espouses the more modern schemes employed today, and which we hope Richt will install at UM. I don't think Richt is prepared to hire someone who doesn't share his philosophy. I'm wondering if Richt employs a 4-3 and wants a pressure defense like Jimmy Johnson's. A lot of this is determined by the kind of offenses we are facing today, which are probably different from from what we faced in '83.
