Men Lie. Women Lie. Numbers Don’t.
I usually post these on Sundays, but last weekend took a toll. I’m sure most here share the same feeling. I mentioned it in another thread, but it’s not how many losses we have, but how we loose that is frustrating. 6-3 is an improvement, but the remaining 3 games don’t have the same positive feel like early in the season. The regression this TEAM is taking is what is concerning. The worst part is, this is the story of the last 20 years with this team. There are glimmers of hope, and then we get sent back to reality and take a step back as a program.
There’s a huge difference between a USC or UCLA 3 loss team and our 3 looses. It’s one thing to loose a shootout to probably a better team. It’s another to outplay, and gain in yards an inferior opponent and just blow a game. Now do it multiple times. And then our 6 wins, we majority of the time play down and don’t look like we should.
Here’s how we rank
The Good.
The defense. Not the best defense in the country, but they are a good defense. And unlike the offense, the are getting better every game. They are continuing to mesh into a complimentary unit. Last Saturday they did their job. The final drive they unfortunately broke. Offense probably a key factor in that. Outside of that, they played an outstanding game. The line has created pressure and lived in the back field. A lot of guys too, seeing sacks from the dline, LB, and secondary. They will have their hands full this weekend.
The Meh.
Rush offense. The total rushing yardage has dropped a bit, but the YPC is excellent. There are so many guys in that room that can get it done in different ways. The meh part, explosive runs. Outside of Brashard Smiths TD Vs Clemson, I don’t think we have had a rush over 30 yards. Or a long TD. With such a good oline and fresh backs, we should be seeing some longer TDs. I think a lot of that is teams dropping guys back in coverage so it is difficult for the RB to get past 2nd/3rd level.
The Bad.
QB play. There are enough threads about Tyler’s performance. I personally think there is something going on mentally or behind the scenes. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and attributed the recent struggles to some of the injuries and some on the WR routes. But it’s at an all time low. I’m not going to degrade the kid, but the coaches need to do what’s best for the team, and him. He’s played bad, yes. But he has been here for years and he needs something other than going out to try and win a football game right now. Coaches need do what is best.
I also need to mention the play calling and aggression. Idk if it’s the QB position, but the decision making from OC and HC are brutal. I think last week we had a couple timeouts, and 2:30 left. We had a chance to score and get the ball back to start the second half. It was a one possession game. We can change the entire outlook of the game. I understand running to start to try and get a first down, but do we not know what a hurry up offense is. I’m baffled that D3 school can run a 2 minute offense but we can’t. The red zone play calling as well. Where had the play design and aggressiveness in A&M gone? If there are decisions because of the QB play to take a different approach, that’s fine. But that should not completely handcuff the offense. We aren’t on a 4th string walk-on. We have 3 D1 qbs on our roster. To be blunt, sack up and play to win.
Moral of the Story.
We are 6-3. That’s still a somewhat positive. Anything can happen on saturdays and anything can happen the last 3 games. But, it’s hard to have optimism right now. The regressions on offense is concerning. The team taking 1 step forward one game, and two back the next doesn’t bread confidence for the program in the right direction. I hope Mario can find a way to pull out an upset akin to Oregon at Ohio State out of his pocket. It’s hard to imagine that is possible with Tyler at QB. I’ll do my FSU Miami by the numbers later. I do think there are favorable areas for us. But, as Team, we aren’t playing like someone putting a CFP team on upset alert, especially on offense and at QB. Mario and Staff need to find away to salvage the season whether that’s a QB switch or finding a way to man up and not let FSU steam roll us.
Go Canes.
