Men Lie. Women Lie. Numbers Don’t.

I usually post these on Sundays, but last weekend took a toll. I’m sure most here share the same feeling. I mentioned it in another thread, but it’s not how many losses we have, but how we loose that is frustrating. 6-3 is an improvement, but the remaining 3 games don’t have the same positive feel like early in the season. The regression this TEAM is taking is what is concerning. The worst part is, this is the story of the last 20 years with this team. There are glimmers of hope, and then we get sent back to reality and take a step back as a program.

There’s a huge difference between a USC or UCLA 3 loss team and our 3 looses. It’s one thing to loose a shootout to probably a better team. It’s another to outplay, and gain in yards an inferior opponent and just blow a game. Now do it multiple times. And then our 6 wins, we majority of the time play down and don’t look like we should.

Here’s how we rank

The Good.
The defense. Not the best defense in the country, but they are a good defense. And unlike the offense, the are getting better every game. They are continuing to mesh into a complimentary unit. Last Saturday they did their job. The final drive they unfortunately broke. Offense probably a key factor in that. Outside of that, they played an outstanding game. The line has created pressure and lived in the back field. A lot of guys too, seeing sacks from the dline, LB, and secondary. They will have their hands full this weekend.

The Meh.
Rush offense. The total rushing yardage has dropped a bit, but the YPC is excellent. There are so many guys in that room that can get it done in different ways. The meh part, explosive runs. Outside of Brashard Smiths TD Vs Clemson, I don’t think we have had a rush over 30 yards. Or a long TD. With such a good oline and fresh backs, we should be seeing some longer TDs. I think a lot of that is teams dropping guys back in coverage so it is difficult for the RB to get past 2nd/3rd level.

The Bad.
QB play. There are enough threads about Tyler’s performance. I personally think there is something going on mentally or behind the scenes. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and attributed the recent struggles to some of the injuries and some on the WR routes. But it’s at an all time low. I’m not going to degrade the kid, but the coaches need to do what’s best for the team, and him. He’s played bad, yes. But he has been here for years and he needs something other than going out to try and win a football game right now. Coaches need do what is best.

I also need to mention the play calling and aggression. Idk if it’s the QB position, but the decision making from OC and HC are brutal. I think last week we had a couple timeouts, and 2:30 left. We had a chance to score and get the ball back to start the second half. It was a one possession game. We can change the entire outlook of the game. I understand running to start to try and get a first down, but do we not know what a hurry up offense is. I’m baffled that D3 school can run a 2 minute offense but we can’t. The red zone play calling as well. Where had the play design and aggressiveness in A&M gone? If there are decisions because of the QB play to take a different approach, that’s fine. But that should not completely handcuff the offense. We aren’t on a 4th string walk-on. We have 3 D1 qbs on our roster. To be blunt, sack up and play to win.

Moral of the Story.
We are 6-3. That’s still a somewhat positive. Anything can happen on saturdays and anything can happen the last 3 games. But, it’s hard to have optimism right now. The regressions on offense is concerning. The team taking 1 step forward one game, and two back the next doesn’t bread confidence for the program in the right direction. I hope Mario can find a way to pull out an upset akin to Oregon at Ohio State out of his pocket. It’s hard to imagine that is possible with Tyler at QB. I’ll do my FSU Miami by the numbers later. I do think there are favorable areas for us. But, as Team, we aren’t playing like someone putting a CFP team on upset alert, especially on offense and at QB. Mario and Staff need to find away to salvage the season whether that’s a QB switch or finding a way to man up and not let FSU steam roll us.

Great stuff as always!

I’ve **** enough on Tyler this week.

I strongly believe that Dawson is coaching for his job. He has been putrid.

He needs to show some creativity, something different than he has been but that is probably optimistic wishing on my part.

I think he really sucks!!

Let’s hope for the stars to align, the defense to continue to play balls out football.

Thanks, and I hear you for sure. I honestly think something is going on or there was decision to run the offense they way it has been. So not necessarily all on Dawson. He still is at fault for the short comings and decisions.

The only thing I’ll add, we need consistency in our coaching staff. I hate firing and hiring a new OC every year. That’s never a recipe for success. So hoping they put it together and can close it out strong

Yeah man. Wholeheartedly agree with everything you say.

Even if Mario has his hand in things (I assume that’s part of what you are alluding to) why the lack of motion, orbit motions, mesh concepts, slants, traps, counters, seem routes, bubble screens, running back screens, getting the guards out and pulling, etc.

It all just reeks of incompetence.

Always look forward to these post.. We dont have explosive runs, because we dont use our explosive players. Brashard gets a carry behind same line = Explosive run.. Other backs get a ton of carries, nothing.. We are a grind it out, slow pace, tuff n fizical unit. Methodical. Mario said its not about the points but guys pushing the pile. :ibis-roflmao-sm3:

First off **** Fsu.
Secondly I noticed PPG and points allowed are missing. Why is that?
Lastly @PIPO finally wrote Tyler.

Thanks OP. Excellent work as always and I learn a lot from your break downs

The defense has been very consistent with noticeable improvmemt just about every week. It’s just a mystery as to why the offense has regressed so much. Seems to be a combination of things that aren’t clearly defined other than the results.

Never seen so many shoe-string tackles and ankle tackles in my life. Do our RBs do High-Knee bag drills?

Penalty yards per game - 123rd

Turnover margin - 106th

This tells me everything I need to know about this team. The bottom line is this is a poorly coached team who consistently is their own worst enemy. There’s no way to defend this.

We can't get out of our own way. Dumb play and coaching.

True. I think that’s why we all get so frustrated watching this team play every Saturday. We see a team capable of so much more if they would just stop playing stupid football. If we go out this Saturday against the Noles and play good, smart football and lose by 7-10 points then so be it. But, if we have another game with 8-10 penalties and 3-4 turnovers I’m gonna pull my friggin’ hair out.

We have no RB's (that we use) with speed. That's the glaring problem as to why can't turn those big holes the OL are opening up into big runs.

We have 1 run over 30 yds vs Miami-OH in the opener. We only have 2 runs over 20 yds in our 6 P5 games.

Our RB's are good at hitting singles and sometimes doubles. They just can't hit HR's.
