Key Rankings Heading Into Clemson

Saturday Blitz did a study 3 years back, and over a 5 year period they found no statistical correlation between penalty yardage and wins.

Case in point: last week -- UNC had double the penalties (14 to 7), and more than double penalty yardage (147 to 69), and they still thumped us.

Bad example considering they also had a +3 turnover margin in a 10 point game, one of those turnovers was a direct 7 points removed from our score.

The point was about penalties and their correlation with winning...everybody knows that the correlation between TO margin and winning is significant.

Less penalties + less turnovers = win? sounds like the recipe for every game for Miami over the past 20 years.

For all those looking for a disciplined (less penalized) team under Mario I wouldn't hold my breathe. Below are his teams rankings in penalties per game.

2021: 111
2020: 61
2019: 79
2018: 33 (1st season at Oregon)

He pretty much got worse once he got his guys in.

Here are his numbers at Miami

2022: 108
2023: 117

For a guy who preaches discipline it seems it never translates on the field for his teams. So if we need to cut down on the penalties to win well then we have a major problem.

2022 rankings:

Alabama 123rd
Tennessee 124th
Washington 100th
FSU 98th
USC 90th
Oregon 85th.

When you get a penalty matters way more than how many. Offsides on 2nd and 3 is not nearly as bad as a personal foul after a 3rd down stop. To me, discipline is more about those dumb penalties than holding or pass interference.

Agreed but I will say that the more penalties you get the greater chances of one of those penalties costing you in a key spot.

Here are this weeks rankings and added Clemson on the other side of the ball.

This isn't rocket science, less penalties and protect the ball. We do that, we can be very a successful team. We rank 121st in the country in penalty yards and 100 in turnover margin. Didn't even know there 120 D1 teams, and absurd our turnover margin. On paper, a veteran QB, stable of RBs, AA at safety positions, and a pretty good D-Line shouldn't have us at 100th in the country. That tells me the same as above, we are not very smart and disciplined, RIGHT NOW. I emphasize right now, because we still have plenty of season and its not where you start but HOW you finish.

Not much else to emphasize based on the below. Clemson is good on Defense. But we can move the ball against almost anyone and we should vs Clemson. We might not throw for 400, but we need to be efficient. We struggle to much in the Red Zone (Offense and Defense) but have to capitalize against a good defense.

On Defense, their offense is to me is Mid. Their red zone Offense is bad and their pass offense isn't great. To me, it feels like Clemson is a team that's great on Defense and uses that side of the ball to drive their Offensive production. Field position, TOP, wear teams out. I think they key is to force Klubnik and their WR to beat us and do what Drake Maye did. Klubnik is no Maye, and their WR are no Tez Walker. It was nice to see our D-Line finally create more pressure, get home, and disrupt things in the backfield last week. Clemson isn't necessary stout out O-Line (63rd TFL and 33rd in Sacks allowed) so we need to continue that. It feels like the keys for use our entirely team centric, nothing around what we should do vs Clemson.

Must do:
- ******IMPROVE THE PENALITIES*********
- Win the turnover battle
- Improve from last week.
- Force Clemson to win in the air. If this game is a shootout I don't think they can keep up.
