Idc one way or the other if Steele is retained or replaced. The hypocrisy and benefit of the doubt he is given is hilarious though. As long as Gattis is fired we can win another off-season.

I think we need to go with somebody with more vigor. I wouldn’t mind going Charlie Strong and opening a DB spot for DVD with Jahmile. ****, even if Jahmile doesn’t stay we can bring back somebody like aristide or another recruiter for LB.
Perfect world I want Geoff Collins though.
I think the mental fortitude/resolve of the team is extremely weak and fragile and when the offense is as bad as it is, it's easy to feel defeated and hopeless when you're on the other side of the ball.
That and we've seen countless busted plays over and over again this year. Just straight up mental collapses.
I'm not sure either the mental strength or the repeated mental errors can fall on the defensive coaches from day 1, but it definitely needs to improve.
It's hard though to say it's coaching or scheme specifically when there are so many other variables and there have been a lot of good signs and improvements from the defense as well.

The offense has been so unimaginably terrible that it has overshadowed the defense. I'm not in support of giving any 7 figure assistants a pass. I will say defensive recruiting is far superior to offensive recruiting so far so Steele is selling something.

When you're scoring less than 20 ppg against P5 opponents, your D is asked to do a lot. Not giving him or the defensive staff a pass by any means - they've been awful in spots - but if we're unable to get a Pete Golding or Geoff Collins-type in here, I'd be open to running it back another year with Steele.
It’s refreshing to read posts here that actually have reasoning and logic behind it. I agree that unless it’s a world class game changer and recruiter, Steele should stay in place. The offensive struggles have greatly impacted the defense this year. There were many instances where opponents started their drives in plus territory or even either in the red zone or right outside of it. This defense in key areas is still relatively young and going through some of the pains is expected. Before the year started we all expected the offense to carry the defense due to what we had seen from the end of last season. However, reality was the offense looking to depend on the defense to not allow above 20 points per game.I’m indifferent on him honestly.
Do I think we would take a significant step in year 2 under him with better personnel and more familiarity with the system etc? Absolutely. IIRC, we haven’t had a blown coverage since VT? As sad as it is, that’s improvement because it literally happened every game before that. There have been several instances where IMO, we just didn’t have the guys. FSU for example, they are running counter and their OL is getting to the 2nd level consistently and instead of Flagg/Smith stepping up and shortening the distance and taking on those blockers and disengaging to disrupt the play, they would shy up and just get completely absorbed. I won’t even mention 0 letting that happen a few times that game as well. I’ve said it all season in **** near every game thread, we have absolutely zero resistance on the 2nd level and it has killed us. I’ve seen improvements at times and us bow up and make plays at crucial times but I’ve also seen us NOT make adjustments and get bullied at the worst times too (Duke). I can count on one hand how many times we have stopped the QB draw successfully when it has been ran on us 25+ times easily. We still leave the flats completely vacant far too many times which is something I will never understand. The passiveness at times confuses me because Steele historically has been extremely aggressive but at the same time I get it because of our CBs and their inability to run + the confusion on the backend that we have had far too often. YES, that is ultimately on him but again, I haven’t seen that happen since VT so there is improvement there (unlike the other side)
If we could get a clear no brainer improvement at DC then I’d be all for it, 100%. But in Y2 in a system with better players and the offense *hopefully* not being **** poor and putting them in pitiful situations, we will be much much better.
The Duke game is one we will always remember because of the 45 score when in reality, one of those scores was a pick 6 and 3 of the scores they started what, within our 25 because of the offense?
Again, some of the stuff we have seen from that side of the ball this year has been poor but I have also seen some stuff that had me encouraged. I am not giving him a B+, probably a B- at best if we are being honest and I cut him and the defense some slack due to the disadvantageous situations that they were put in often by the offense. We have some guys on that side though who HAVE developed and who HAVE played extremely well at times and Y2 in the same system with better players around them will really benefit them so. Again, if we can get a clear upgrade I would be all for it but if we kept Steele I wouldn’t be upset either.

Yes, there were instances where opponents drove down the field on us, much like Clemson did. However, those were due to great scheming from Clemson finding our weak points and attacking them. He made the adjustments and the defense tightened up, although it was later than we wanted. Many don’t realize that the personnel that he has to work with isn’t the easiest to deal with. I don’t really care to bash players because as a former athlete, I know how difficult it can be, but Steele tweaked his defense to be very much less aggressive to give additional help to Ivy in coverage. Due to ivy being burnt time after time early in the year he’s asked the safety’s to bracket WR that he’s lined up against. By doing so that takes an extra man out of the assignment which leads to not being able to bring an extra blitzer to create more pressure or have an added guy responsible closer to the flats, or even a better approach to spy the QB in zone coverages. The focus, so much, is to not get beat deep that it gives up the simplest things.
While this isn’t for me to clearly dismiss Steele from blame, I do think another year with a bit better personnel will hopefully improve. Early on, Kitchens, while a great instinctive player, as we all know gambled and got burned for it. Many would argue to bench him or get at the coach for that. To some degree, you get on a coach, but at the same time that’s a two-way fold. As a sophomore he’s going to make mistakes and you have to grind through them as learning lessons, but you also don’t want to fully take that aspect out of his nature and make him a shell of himself and second guess. As a coach, it’s better to feed that, if the player is as smart as kitchens. Have him be himself, within the system. You just let them know if you take that gamble you better make the play. So those burns early in the year are learning lessons to me, as painful as they were.
With all that said, while I would like to see Steele be more aggressive rather than always depending on just the front four. I do believe he will get back to that once he gets a few more people in there that he thinks he can trust in their abilities to play within his scheme.

I don't think I'm giving Steele a pass as much as still not convinced he's a problem.. the defense has shown some improvements over last year at least, right? even with the offense working against them...
But the offense has declined in every category... significantly... Gattis and this offense Mario chose is a failure. that's crystal clear. it has failed the kids. it has failed the team. it has failed the program...
Steele isn't as clear to me yet.... just my opinion...

I’d love to bring Geoff Collins is as an analyst, but I doubt he’d want to go to a school with 2 other high profile DC/LB coaches. Only way we’d get him on staff would be in one of Kevin Steele/ Charlie strong leave.

Thank you. We've played a garbage *** schedule, I don't understand why people are grasping at straws to justify Steele. ANY semi-competent offense mopped the floor with this defense.
Don't care for the talent argument. Gattis has a talent argument and nobody is absolving him for being the trash he is.

The is seeing the big picture. I’m not saying the defense was defensible, but with any semblance of offense, it could have had better results.

Firing both these guys is just bad optics, "come to Miami where you can deal with ultra toxicity from fans, media, admin, even your own players will recruit against you!"
We're trying to make this place attractive again ya know.. fire gattis this season, fire Steele after next season if no improvement.

With the level of overall talent Miami has in the secondary and at LBers, without being to run Steeles full scheme, and an offense that sucks diddly poo ***, Miami ranks 51st in DFEI.

And yet Steele keeps getting high profile jobs. Clemson, Bama, Auburn, TN, LSU, etc. Note how many SEC schools.
Has Steele’s tenure so far at Miami been less than stellar? Absolutely. What I’m saying is consider ALL the factors contributing to his results instead of looking at those results from a micro level. You do understand what that means, right?
