I can support this. I was highly unimpressed with our physicality. We seemed undisciplined, tackling didn't improve and we gave up a ton of blown coverages. How much of that is on Steele is hard to gauge in 1 year. If he returns we better have vast improvement in those areas.I’m indifferent on him honestly.
Do I think we would take a significant step in year 2 under him with better personnel and more familiarity with the system etc? Absolutely. IIRC, we haven’t had a blown coverage since VT? As sad as it is, that’s improvement because it literally happened every game before that. There have been several instances where IMO, we just didn’t have the guys. FSU for example, they are running counter and their OL is getting to the 2nd level consistently and instead of Flagg/Smith stepping up and shortening the distance and taking on those blockers and disengaging to disrupt the play, they would shy up and just get completely absorbed. I won’t even mention 0 letting that happen a few times that game as well. I’ve said it all season in **** near every game thread, we have absolutely zero resistance on the 2nd level and it has killed us. I’ve seen improvements at times and us bow up and make plays at crucial times but I’ve also seen us NOT make adjustments and get bullied at the worst times too (Duke). I can count on one hand how many times we have stopped the QB draw successfully when it has been ran on us 25+ times easily. We still leave the flats completely vacant far too many times which is something I will never understand. The passiveness at times confuses me because Steele historically has been extremely aggressive but at the same time I get it because of our CBs and their inability to run + the confusion on the backend that we have had far too often. YES, that is ultimately on him but again, I haven’t seen that happen since VT so there is improvement there (unlike the other side)
If we could get a clear no brainer improvement at DC then I’d be all for it, 100%. But in Y2 in a system with better players and the offense *hopefully* not being **** poor and putting them in pitiful situations, we will be much much better.
The Duke game is one we will always remember because of the 45 score when in reality, one of those scores was a pick 6 and 3 of the scores they started what, within our 25 because of the offense?
Again, some of the stuff we have seen from that side of the ball this year has been poor but I have also seen some stuff that had me encouraged. I am not giving him a B+, probably a B- at best if we are being honest and I cut him and the defense some slack due to the disadvantageous situations that they were put in often by the offense. We have some guys on that side though who HAVE developed and who HAVE played extremely well at times and Y2 in the same system with better players around them will really benefit them so . Again, if we can get a clear upgrade I would be all for it but if we kept Steele I wouldn’t be upset either.
PS - please come back Akheem.
I'm aware every point wasn't entirely the defenses fault. However. We also allowed how many 3rd and 4th down conversions? The QB also looked like Vick half the game.We had 30 turnovers that game to be fair

P.S. FSU game we had a blown coverage. I didn't really watch Clemson game but I saw Ivey get dusted not sure whose fault it was.
The tackling at times, or lack of, definitely stands out for sure. I definitely should have mentioned that but again I can see better players improving that overall. The main culprits for the consistent bad/weak tackling, at least based on what I have seen and can remember are the same bunch…James, Blades, K. Smith, Flagg from time to time, and Steed before the unfortunate injury and he is going to lose the battle vs RBs and TEs 90% of the time anyway due to physical limitations anyway. James is just a soft player, all it really boils down to IMO. Yes, every defender who plays significant minutes has probably missed a tackle at some point but that happens everywhere. I’m talking about the guys we scream at in the game thread evert Saturday. James just appears to be a soft guy in general. I don’t want to throw the uncoachable label on him but I can count on one hand how many times I have seen his tall *** break down and wrap up. Why can’t he do that more often? Who knows. I can’t explain him really any other way. I am nitpicking, but we have guys that are tackling just fine as well on the 2nd and 3rd level too so whose to blame? (Rhetorical)
I don’t remember the blown coverage vs FSU but you could be right. If it happened, it wasn’t as blatant as the ones early in the season and those were the types that I was referring to. Yes, still bad nonetheless but I can’t see all that not being improved for the reasons I mentioned above and you know me, I’m not sugar coating and koolaid drinking shiet.
Don’t recall any blown coverages vs Clemson. If you saw Ivey getting dusted then that was likely just that lol, mans can’t run worth a fvck and it may look like a blown coverage lol.
Again, agree with you on all of that. All of those things you mentioned showed up and showed up too much for our liking but I saw enough on the flip side to where IMO, it can and will be much better with more reps/familiarity and better guys at those spots.
Now will those other guys get those reps when it matters next year? That’s a conversation for another day that I’m sure this board will discuss 7484848 times before September lol.
We are a terrible undisciplined team. The offense sucks but the defense being less sucky is a terrible way to cope. Nothing is different on defense from last year. Nothing is improved. We got 6-6 330lb Darrell Jackson covering the flats.
Completely agree with all of this.I’m not out on Steele he’s been a good to great DC at every stop and here at Miami would be his outlier bc Miami sucks. I would give him 1 more year max to prove it. Also allows Mario to full court press offensive staff
this is where im at. i dont think steele did a bad job this year, i just think we can find a better younger DC imo. id like some younger hungry assistants in there that will put in the time that mario requires for recruitingThere will be some really good DCs looking for jobs in a few weeks.
Pete Goulding (Alabama) and Jeff Collins are 2 experienced, productive DCs, who also hold their own recruiting. Collins, who was recently let go at GT, actually recruited really well but wasn't given enough time to turn around that program. He signed Jahmyr Gibbs at GT, holding off P5s like Bama, Mich, UF, and aTm.
We have an opportunity to upgrade this offseason
hes been a great DC at nearly every stop. he was fired at clemsonCompletely agree with all of this.

Bama people have been complaining about Golding from the jump. I've been disappointed in the D this year, but no way in **** do I want that guy. There will be some really good DCs looking for jobs in a few weeks.

i didnt specifically mean goulding.Bama people have been complaining about Golding from the jump. I've been disappointed in the D this year, but no way in **** do I want that guy.
When they get 8 extra possessions because of turnovers, it's hard to judge the defense...45 to Dukeyea definitely a B+
Finished with the 37th ranked defense allowing 365 Yards per game against D1 teams, not bad considering how terrible the offense has been
These people got battered wife syndrome. Make excuses for anything.45 to Dukeyea definitely a B+
