Kevin Steele

Defense is far from championship caliber, but despite having a bunch of weak links, has been good enough to keep us in games.

The defense is not the reason we’re 5-6 (ok maybe aside from MTSU).

If we had any semblance of an offense, our defense would probably be playing well enough to at least have a winning record.

Once we take care of Gattis (and maybe a few others) and fix the offense, we can re-evaluate Steele next season. Unless this season has been such a disaster that he wants to retire, which I would understand.

Guess he and Mario are shooting kids straight about future playing prospects. Most of the early portal action from his side of the ball.

There will be some really good DCs looking for jobs in a few weeks.

Pete Goulding (Alabama) and Jeff Collins are 2 experienced, productive DCs, who also hold their own recruiting. Collins, who was recently let go at GT, actually recruited really well but wasn't given enough time to turn around that program. He signed Jahmyr Gibbs at GT, holding off P5s like Bama, Mich, UF, and aTm.

We have an opportunity to upgrade this offseason
Golding is trash water. He has insane talent there. Anderson turner koolaid battle toto and five stars coming out of his ******. And they are just meh imo

Steele had some head scratching moments where his in game adjustments left a lot to be desired. But this guy knows Defense and had a pretty good year. Not sure how anyone can think he should have been much more aggressive when he had no pass rush, a terrible lb group and corners that were getting beat straight up by wr’s at MTSU.

Was he a “home run” hire, no. But I think a solid B hire, especially considering we aren’t exactly the program home run hires are flocking to work for yet. I’d like to see what he can do here with more talent and an offense with a pulse.

I’d like to see him stay and build on what has been started on that side of the ball. Hopefully though with more talent he can get more creative.

You think Golding and Collins are upgrades over Steele?

I don’t

Check out his resume (and results) before Alabama. Golding has had success without 5 star athletes. That is how he ended up at Alabama in the first place. The guy had no connection to Alabama and only held DC positions at G5 schools before Nick Saban took him on and, after one year together, named him his DC. Usually, one off year doesn't mean the game has passed you by.

Geoff Collins can recruit his *** off and had TOP 10 defenses Mississippi State and UF, respectfully. He had the top defense in the sunbelt at FIU, where he was the DC for CMC. He outrecruited everyone in the country and convinced Jahmyr Gibbs to sign at GT (where he was the HC) over UF, Bama, Michigan and just about every SEC school. He can recruit and coaches solid defenses. Kevin Steele has a longer resume, but not a better one.

Now, I've explained (intelligently I believe) why I believe we have better options at DC then Kevin Steele. I'm not dogging him, I just believe, from what I've already seen, we can do better. We have the resources to hire a legit shark at DC. We shouldn't let that opportunity pass us by because our D isn't 'that bad'.

Now, Can you actually support your opinion? (Which was the Golding/Collins isn't an upgrade)

DJ Ivey had scratching moments...pathetic...should've never played for the Canes..let's call a spade a spade.

Some players are pathetic and don't belong... btw, Ivey is an adult.

Oh the irony if we hire Dan Mullen and Geoff Collins, we’d have the early 2010s Miss St + Mario coaching staff

Steele mentioned in the beginning he had to reduce his playbook based on available personnel to make it easier to understand.

He gets a B+ from me. Considering all the new staff, portal additions, and a putrid offense, the D has performed OK.

How many corner recruits did DJ Ivey tell to not come here?

...

and imagine if DJ Ivey told you to come on board, you'll love it here? lmfao, thats the rest of our CBs. Ivey got'em.

I’m indifferent on him honestly.

Do I think we would take a significant step in year 2 under him with better personnel and more familiarity with the system etc? Absolutely. IIRC, we haven’t had a blown coverage since VT? As sad as it is, that’s improvement because it literally happened every game before that. There have been several instances where IMO, we just didn’t have the guys. FSU for example, they are running counter and their OL is getting to the 2nd level consistently and instead of Flagg/Smith stepping up and shortening the distance and taking on those blockers and disengaging to disrupt the play, they would shy up and just get completely absorbed. I won’t even mention 0 letting that happen a few times that game as well. I’ve said it all season in **** near every game thread, we have absolutely zero resistance on the 2nd level and it has killed us. I’ve seen improvements at times and us bow up and make plays at crucial times but I’ve also seen us NOT make adjustments and get bullied at the worst times too (Duke). I can count on one hand how many times we have stopped the QB draw successfully when it has been ran on us 25+ times easily. We still leave the flats completely vacant far too many times which is something I will never understand. The passiveness at times confuses me because Steele historically has been extremely aggressive but at the same time I get it because of our CBs and their inability to run + the confusion on the backend that we have had far too often. YES, that is ultimately on him but again, I haven’t seen that happen since VT so there is improvement there (unlike the other side)

If we could get a clear no brainer improvement at DC then I’d be all for it, 100%. But in Y2 in a system with better players and the offense *hopefully* not being **** poor and putting them in pitiful situations, we will be much much better.

The Duke game is one we will always remember because of the 45 score when in reality, one of those scores was a pick 6 and 3 of the scores they started what, within our 25 because of the offense?

Again, some of the stuff we have seen from that side of the ball this year has been poor but I have also seen some stuff that had me encouraged. I am not giving him a B+, probably a B- at best if we are being honest and I cut him and the defense some slack due to the disadvantageous situations that they were put in often by the offense. We have some guys on that side though who HAVE developed and who HAVE played extremely well at times and Y2 in the same system with better players around them will really benefit them so 🤷🏾‍♂️. Again, if we can get a clear upgrade I would be all for it but if we kept Steele I wouldn’t be upset either.

PS - please come back Akheem.
