Just adding players is how you end up with guys like Kirk who don't even play and is a waste of friggin space. We only need to portal for absolutely proven upgrades. Not just cause a guy is an upperclassmen and played a few games before.

I agree with the sentiment but stating that their aren't high quality portal options is unobjectively false. This year alone I would have taken Zachariah Branch, Eric Singleton, Nic Anderson, Duce Robinson, Noah Thomas, and Barion Brown all as upgrades to what we have.
 
Who are some names y’all feeling?

Hines Ward intrigues me from a crooting standpoint

The Houston kid was a bad portal pick up mostly on hindsight because all it did was eat reps that would have gone to jojo, Carr or chance which would have been invaluable now. Cam would have made those young kids look great and built confidence… Beck is still a very good college QB and I still have faith he will put the ball in their hands.

I think we the Houston kid and the Marshall DE Alston were both probably costly investments when someone like Bryant or Lightfoot should have been playing. Seems like we learned from that and not just taking guys and risking younger talented players transferring or stunting their development

CIS told me we needed to take Sam Brown because Restrepo was going to suck without Van Dyke, Jacoby George was going to get kicked off the team and Isiah Horton was a jag.

Agreed. I didn’t hate the Brown pick up and I don’t think he was bad but Horton made the jump and we could have used that WR4 spot for some of the younger guys. But you know, hindsight being 20/20 and all.

That's because our philosophy in the portal was a lot different. When Mario first took over, we didn't have the depth that's needed to be successful. You needed those cheap portal rentals while you build your roster through high school recruiting. Now that we've done that, we really should only be prioritizing the portal for those high impact players. Also, your exact comment proves why you should prioritize developing your high school talent.

Well that approach got us 12-13. High impact players should always be the philosophy.
