He's a step up from the Heurtelou types. But I'll be relieved when we finally recruit some legit stars at that position, regardless of where we have to go to find them. South Florida is mostly a dry well for defensive tackles.
Happy Adjusters take the smallest indication or trend and pump it far beyond what it's worth, essentially making it whatever they want it to be. Unfortunately that has been a staple on Canes and Dolphins forums the past few years. The Dolphins were going to have a Top 5 defense last season. That was the Happy Adjuster assertion. One guy who claims to be a former scout posted on a major Dolphin forum that the defense should resemble the '85 Bears. And he was serious.
I get sick of pointing out that those types have no clue toward the burden. It is simply not a good way to think. They'll see a new coaching hire and immediately proclaim we'll have a Top 5 defensive line, or whatever. That might be swell if the nation were comprised of 15 teams.
At least there is reason for legit optimism next season with Richt and Gase. Richt should reinstall gorgeous basic football. I'm still disgusted that we gave away that Cincinnati game last season by refusing to merely line up in the I formation and pound away at them, like Rocky Long and San Diego State did in the bowl game en route to a 42-0 lead. Gase might be the smartest guy in the room, or among them. The Dolphins have had just the opposite for a decade or more...dullards galore.
I realize this is a defensive tackle thread. It's just that the Happy Adjuster mindset is so pathetic. Much more often you are what you are. Norton is a good but not great athlete who was severely out of shape last season, and not always competitive. He allowed himself to get turned or pushed back with ease, and not much annoyance. Naturally a more aggressive scheme and confident team will produce markedly improved results, mostly against meager foes. The Happy Adjusters will go overboard. That's not exactly a wild stab.
Meanwhile, when the theme for year after year is that we have failed in recruiting defensive tackles, you've got to be a special type of low percentage Adjuster to expect the results to detour sharply to the upside, regardless of coaching hires or scheme.
From what I've seen, the edge guys figure to benefit most from Diaz and Kuligowski. Diaz runs lots of loops with his tackles while mostly prioritizing waves of pressure off the flank. Kuligowski benefited from sharp recruiting at Missouri, guys with low to moderate star ratings who immediately jumped out as more special than that. He did get excellent pass rush production from ends who did not fare as well as expected in the metric evaluations after their career ended. Even a top rated guy like Shane Ray did poorly in those tests that normally translate to pass rush projection in the NFL. I expect dramatically improved hand usage and techniques from those edge guys. I'm not sure about defensive tackle improvement. We don't have any Sheldon Richardsons at the moment. Not even close.
