I saw somebody in a thread mention this podcast where former Cane Kelvin Harris interviews former Cane DLine great and current NC State DLine coach Kevin Patrick.
So I went to take a listen for myself.

They talked about alot of things, from Jimmy & Butch changing their positions, to Kelvin taking The Rock to Rolexx on his recruiting visit, to Patrick's coaching stops.

An interesting part was around the 40 minute mark where Kelvin tells about how after Richt hired Jess Simpson, Damione Lewis told him some differences he saw on film between DLinemen coached by Kul and by Simpson. Very interesting stuff.

Worth a listen:

wait. so aside from the praise of jess simpson, were they basically saying KP turned us down?

In the audio, it seemed like they tried to frame it more as NC State gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. Kelvin acknowledged that Miami contacted Patrick but (and I'm only 50 minutes in) didn't say what level of contact it was. So I don't know what happened there beyond contact.

one thing i feel great about is EVERYONE that has a tie to the program and speaks of Jess has nothing but positive things to say about him

Funny exchange near the end:

Kelvin Harris: Maybe we'll bring you back one day as a Head Coach. You never know. I mean, Mario's a Head Coach. Anything can happen.
Kevin Patrick: *laughs* You said it not me brutha.
Kelvin Harris: *laughs* Some of the stories man.
Kevin Patrick: *laughs* Yeah man, mum's the word.

Great, great podcast for Canes fans and college football junkies.
At around 1:10, strong stuff about the manipulation of the recruiting rankings. Patrick says some coaches get bonuses based on the number of four and five stars they sign. During the process, they call their contacts at the ratings services and ask them to upgrade their recruits...He says he doesn’t bother with the ratings at all...
Patrick talks about how hellish it was to go up against Leon Searcy in practice...
And Harris tells how Jimmy and Butch manipulated him to switch from linebacker to DE.
A good formula. Y’all should add this format — old school Canes talk — to the Canesinsight podcasts...Great stuff is revealed. Easy pickins...

@Brooklyndee has said multiple times the ratings **** is semi rigged, and people didn't believe him. well a coach just said it too

Good post, OP.

I've been hearing his podcast for a bit. He had Lamar Thomas on a few weeks before paradise camp.

Its embarrassing that it took this podcast for yall to realize the star system was rigged. Some of us have been saying that for years, if not decades...

Hmmm..Then they'll be 10 more threads on us having too many 3*.

There may be some manipulation of the star system but right now it is the best indicator we have of a team's future performance.

Teams with over 50% 4+ star players win championships. Teams with less than 50% do not.

This.
It's a proven fact, not a matter of opinion. If you want to win big, you HAVE to have a majority of your roster made up of 4 star and higher players.

Now there are certainly areas where the recruiting services push agendas and manipulate ratings. Like why are some 4 star guys rated much higher than other 4 star guys? What exactly is the cutoff between 5 and 4 stars? All of this stuff is subjective and highly speculative. That's why you shouldn't gauge recruiting on class ranking. The only thing that should concern fans is 1) were more than half the recruits rated 4 stars or higher? 2)was the staff able to upgrade the overall talent level of the roster, especially in areas of "need"?

Last year Brevin and Mark Pope should have been composite 5 stars maybe even Nesta too. If all of them are 5 stars we probably finish top 5 in the in rankings. Since we signed all 3 it has no bearing on how things play out. You must coach them up! If you have seen some of the kids in the rankings play there is def a bias in some of the rankings.
