Being from KY, I get a lot of weird looks when I’m out with my Canes hats and shirts on. I’m definitely the only Miami fan in my town, and probably the general area. While the Kentucky Wildcats may be close to my heart because I’ve had family members graduate from the university and I’m connected to some guys who played there (Tim Couch, former #1 pick and UK legend, grew up like 20 minutes from my house), Miami was the team I truly loved and watched from the time I began watching football. Miami vs. FSU in 2001 was the very first game I watched and really got into. I didn’t know anything about the game or the storied history of Miami football, but I was enamored by them immediately. The jerseys, the iconic white helmets, the amber colored visors worn by Sean Taylor, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, etc.. I was hooked.
Jeremy Shockey will always be my all-time favorite Hurricane. I had a great friend in grade school who loved the Canes back then as well, and we would play catch in his backyard and he would pretend to be Ken Dorsey and I was Shockey, of course.
I have followed the Canes ever since then, through the good times and bad, and there may have been a whole lot of dark years, but I never gave up hope that the resurgence of “The U” would happen. And now, here we are, feeling like it’s 2001 all over again. I can safely say I haven’t been this hyped for Canes football since those early 2000’s days. You can just feel it. The U is coming.
I just wanted to give a special thanks to all of you amazing people in so many different Canes groups all over the internet who’ve been so incredibly welcoming and gracious to me. A lot of fanbases are super territorial and think you can only root for a school if you live in that state, and trust me, I’ve gotten plenty of hate from Kentucky fans about it. I’ve never once got that vibe from any Canes fans, and I think that’s because there’s so many of us scattered all over the country and the globe, even. We may not have the largest fanbase, but we definitely have the most culturally diverse and most international fanbase in college football, and perhaps any sport. I’ve already been invited to a bunch of tailgates for the Wake Forest road game, which is actually the first Canes game I have ever attended, and I am very much looking forward to it. After the run I watched last year, I knew it was time to buy some tickets.
It never ceases to amaze me how we’re all just one big family, that’s really how you guys have made it feel for me, and I appreciate each and every one of you.
